Claypot Chicken Rice @ Huen Kee Claypot Chicken Rice, Pudu, Kuala Lumpur

I normally do not like my food incinerated before its put before me. But this, like barbecue, is a huge exception. A delicious huge exception.

A peek inside

Located near the infamous Pudu morning market, this local haunt has been serving piping hot claypot chicken rice for years on end. Some food review magazines and websites tout this to be the best claypot chicken rice in Klang Valley. I have not tried a whole lot of claypot chicken rice to support that statement, but it was sure quite good. As such, getting claypot chicken rice is an obvious no brainer.

The double. Its absolutely huge!

The claypot comes in two sizes, an individual for one and a double for two obviously.  And since I was with two other friends, we ordered an individual and a double. You may have to wait a bit for the rice to arrive at your table as they are cooked to order. But heck, it is worth the wait. The rice was well cooked and fluffy, but leaving behind some crunchy and delectable layer of crust at the parts where it touches the claypot. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, with the classic soy sauce and oyster sauce marinade you get from claypot chicken rice. And a generous topping of Chinese waxed sausage was the perfect finishing touch.

Dug out treasure.

Despite not having a lot of past claypot chicken rice experience, I can honestly say that the flavour from the dish came a lot from charcoal flames that cooked the claypots. There was that smoky backdrop behind each bite that was unmissable. And it was that smoky backdrop that made this dish quite special. They also provide some salted fish for you to top off your rice if you are into this sort of thing. I am and the pungent and slightly edgy aroma was what I needed to cut through this lard heavy monster. What an absolute beast of a meal.

Deceptively awesome

To compliment the rice, my party of three ordered some pepper pork soup, which is one of my favourites. This came in a claypot too. Being a fan of organ meat, this was thoroughly enjoyable for me. The soup was very spicy for obvious reasons. Despite that, there is a lot of depth in terms of flavour. Slightly sweet and having a slight savoury tinge, I would not be surprise if this was a mix of a chicken and pork bone combination with some dried squid. I might be wrong, but this was some amazing soup.

Tangy!

And to wash it all down, I had an umbra plum drink. That green magma was just simply refreshing and the combination of sweet and sour just works with this porky experience.

Burn baby burn!!!!

A local establishment with little frills and a whole lot of history, you bet this place will provide you with a gourmet experience on a budget. An individual serving was for RM13.50 and a double was for RM25.00. The soup, stood for a modest RM20.00 and my drink was RM3.80.

Front of the house.

Leaving very satisfied, this is a place that I have no choice but to give a two thumbs up. The food was great, the prices were reasonable and seeing the claypots being exposed to fire was the artistic flair to cap it all off. Fancy a go? The address is as follows:

59, Ground Floor, Jalan Yew, Pudu, 55100 Kuala Lumpur.
