Bak Kut Teh @ Restoran Yu Yi, Off Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur

It is always fascinating to find good bak kut teh outside of Klang. Although we all know that Klang is famous for that porky wonder, it is a shame at times as some places do not get the exposure they deserve. Well, here is another KL spot that deserves your attention.

And also, I need a break from all that boba.

Crowded

Restoran Yu Yi has been around since the 80s and have been here since. Their main restaurant is based at Jalan Imbi, famed for old fashioned Chinese fare. From egg tarts and fried noodles, bak kut teh is one of the signature dishes of this place. It is located in another gritty part of the city. But do not let the humble exterior fool you. Make the effort and you will be rewarded.

Dinner is served

Being a BKT shop, we would have to order that this place is famous for eh? So when the pot arrived, we were amazing with the quantity that was given to us. The pot was just loaded with ingredients, and for the first time in a long time, alot of vegetables. BKt has alwaays been known to be a meat heavy soup and the only non meat item would probably be tofu and some mushrooms. But in this pot, there seems to be alot of chinese cabbage in it. And that made a huge difference.

Not a pot of gold, but close enough.

The soup was sweet and savoury. The standard herb infusion of licourice and cinnamon is present. But the sweetness of the cabbage adds some smoothness to the overall dish. It was filling but then not heavy. This was a good touch. Also if you are a fan of mushrooms, this place does not cut corners, while bundles of enoki inside.

Meaty treasures underneath

The pot was also loaded with all the good stuff, like tripe and intestines. I do feel that just lean meat alone does not cut it. The overall experience does need some of the innards to make it proper and complete. Also that claypot was for one person which stood for RM26. But as it was so loaded, it fed the two of us just fine. Spectacular.

Greasy, but good.

And of course, the whole thing will not be complete without some fried crullers (yiu char kuey) and chinese tea. And the overall meal was slightly over RM 40. A good deal.

This was a real amazing find and would probably come again. Do note that this place closes early. We got here just before closing time, which is abit odd considering their closing time is about 8.30 pm. A bit too early if you ask me. But they were still kind enough to stay in the premises while they prepare to close down.

As thee place has closed down for the day, it would make more sense
to take this sign rather than the front of the place like I always do.

Be that as it may, that was a great dinner and probably much healthier than your standard BKT joint with all that veggie. Fancy a go? The address is as follows:

53-6, Jln Barat, Off Jalan Imbi 55100 Kuala Lumpur
