Braised Duck @ Restoran Kam Heong, Petaling Jaya

Commonly referred to as "PJ Famous Duck Rice", Restoran Kam Heong is what many claim to be the best duck rice in town. Well, I may not have enough duck rice in PJ to confirm the statement. But if you ask me if its good? I would have to say yes. A strong resounding "YES".

A quiet weekend

The place has a simple interior, befitting an old fashion every man Chinese kopitiam. What sets it apart, are the ducks that are being hung in front of the shop and vats of side dishes by the aisle. When you go in, you are already treated to that aromatic fragrance consisting of cinnamon and all spice. It does not smell like Christmas, but a bit close.

Look how it shines!

Being a duck place, you have to get the duck. It was succulent and well braised. There were evident trails of cinnamon and star anise. I do suspect some cloves in between. And being a braised dish, a good quality soy sauce would be a major suspect in the ingredients list. I do believe that soy sauce does change its flavour when you cook it for extended periods, compared to it being used as a condiment or dip. The skin was also spectacular. It was firm and yet pliable. Some people avoid it , as it is very fatty but that is where all the flavour is at. Well, the gym is always open .

Very sinful.

Speaking of fatty, we also had a serving of pork knuckle which was truly incredible. The outer parts of the skin was chewy and succulent too, with slivers of fat between the meat and bones. The fat has a butter like after taste, but sticks to your teeth like a child that lacks attention. The meat came off the bone with ease and it has a more soy based profile compared to the duck. It still has spices in it, just not so obvious. A good second companion.

Looks can be deceiving.

We also got a plate of pickled greens, which somehow was not too bad. I would have thought something like this would have bathed in seawater. But it turned out to be quite pleasant, and has a slightly sweet taste. Braised eggs were good too. Soaked in the bathwater that the duck came from, it has a tremendous amount of flavour and impact.

The whole array. Dinner is served!

Located in a corner lot of Bandar Baru, this establishment is a major stronghold in the local community, serving up quality duck at reasonable prices. And the prices are not bad, where our total bill was about RM60, more or less.

The front counter, where the magic happens.

I only knew of it recently when my cousin working in Macau asked us to bring her there for dinner. Sorry, I am not a PJ boy in any event. Although, I know its loaded with alot of amazing food spots. I will definitely put more effort in hunting them down. If you are going to start your own PJ food scramble from this fine establishment, or just want to get some good and honest grub, the address is as follows:

10, Jalan Tengah, Bandar Baru Petaling Jaya, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

The front, if you are into al fresco dining.
