Dinner @ Alexandra Dining, Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur
There is no short of places that like to make the eating experience more colouful and artistic. In fact, it is now a sort of standard operating procedure for most eateries, if you want to be somewhere that can earn a good buck. if it is not suitable for photos online, you are probably missing something. However, there are places that was bale to create a fine medium where aesthetics are in order but at the same time, not distract others with regard to the actual reason why you are here, which is the food.

If you notice, there is Mrs Potts at the counter. |
Alexandra Dining is a restaurant and cafe that pushes the aesthetics to the next gear, with the food looking more unique and unusual. This is a good thing for me as I write about food, it will make the photo taking experience so much better. I came here with an old friend Aaron (not A A Ron) for dinner and some catching up. We decided to order a serving of pasta in the form of a classic carbonara spiked with mushrooms and fish eggs and fried Hawaiian pizza to share. Pasta stood at a modest RM 29 while the pizza was RM33. I hope no Italians are reading this as this may create some form of culinary culture war. However, you got to admire the creativity.

Surprisingly good. |
The pasta was pretty good actually. Sure it is not your classic carbonara, ie pasta with cheese and rendered down pork fat with eggs. Rather, it was poached eggs, on a pappardelle, which has been doused with a creamy mushroom sauce and the aforementioned sushi style fish eggs. Honestly, I like the presentation and the combination of various elements seem to work for me. I like the tobiko fish eggs, giving everything a salty and fresh experience. The eggs, specially when the yolks are broken down and mixed with the overall package, make it quite creamy and rich, when the sauce was already pretty good. The pasta was also springy and firm to the bite. Not classic carbonara for sure, but I still liked this a lot.

The pizza was a bit of a hit and miss. The pizza base is some form of fried flatbread, but at least it was not roti canai. It had lots of ham and pineapple which was nice. And some fresh salad leaves on top gave it a fresh bite. There was a creamy sauce which reminded me of some form of garlic aioli but not quite. I get what they are trying to do here. A bit too adventurous, but still not too bad and something very easy to share.

Refreshing |
To douse things down I had a basil sour. Unlike Japan, most sour drinks are not alcoholic which was nice. I was having a bad stomach at the time, so not having anything boozy was good for me. I think living in Japan has caused my stomach to be too clean. In fact, the only time I had food poisoning in Japan was because of my own cooking. But that is a topic for another day. In any event, this was pretty zesty and had a herbal punch which I liked. This stood at a slightly steep RM19.

You definitely cannot miss this sign! |
Overall, this was a nice place to be. The decor was really flashy and makes you feel like you just got warped into a Disney Princess bedroom. The food was adventurous and ambitious, and honestly not bad. I saw some bad reviews online about this place and I feel it is not really justified. The only problem here is probably getting parking which is a nightmare in this side of KL. But like most things, the only way you can judge something is when you come and see things for yourself. So if you want to drop by and try something on the unique side, the address is as follows. Also, thanks Aaron for your evening that night.
