Dim Sum @ Sing Pao Dim Sum, Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur

It is not often you have dim sum late at night. In these parts, its more mean to be a breakfast or lunch affair. Having said that, I was somehow thrown to this side of the city during a work trip. And as I yet had my dinner yet, why not right?

Well, al fresco anyone?

Sing Pao Dim Sum is an establishment that sells, well, dim sum! The name is an obvious telltale. However, this place sells it from 5pm onwards,a far cry to the usual teahouses we have in other parts of this city. A few friends did tell me to try their food if I am near that area. So, might as well grab this chance.

I may have went overboard

Like most dim sum places, a waiter will come by with a tray or trolley with goodies to pic and then they will charge you at the end based on how many plates that were taken. Its similar to the tramline sushi but less automated. After picking a few standard issue orders and things that caught my attention, I raked in a total damage sum of RM37.50. I was pretty hungry so I ended up with 6 plates with a serving of chee cheong fun. And of course, a serving of tea. A bit hefty for one person, but we have to live a little right. Also I was famished, so the extra calories are justified. Still, its kinda affordable since we are talking about dim sum here.

Pretty

The fare was actually pretty decent however, I would not call it mindblowing. Each piece was executed well and each dumpling had the dainty and delicate shape that you would expect. Like the hargao shrimp dumpling looked amazing. although their shumai seems quite rough on the edges. Tastewise however, seems a bit lacking. I am not sure if it was my unlucky day, everything feels a bit under seasoned. And the corn starch that is used to bind ingredients in a dumpling, feels like its still not mixed well together. There is still a granular feeling when I chew into the shrimp dumplings.

One of the brighter spots of my meal

The fried items were pretty good though. The sesame balls were serious heavy hitters. The fried tofu was also something I really enjoyed. To some extent this saved this meal for me. The one saving grace was the chee cheong fun. This came in piping hot and with a vengeance. The skin of the rice roll was delicate, smooth but yet supple at the same time. The sweet and salty sauce was an assault to the senses, and the chilli paste that came along with it completed the attack with a coup de grace of spice and umami. This was something I really liked. I seriously loved it.

Sleeper hit!

Well, I might sound a bit harsh here, but I am just telling things as how I tasted it. Granted, it is a humble shoplot which serves something that is usually meant for earlier times of the day. So some flexibility can be given. I am not saying it is horrible, but there are many places out there that are miles better and you are planning to get some serious dumplings, here is not the place.

A peek into the indoor dining area

Having said that, if someone asks me if I want to have dim sum here after work, I probably would not mind it at all. So if you are somehow stuck in Old Klang Road and you need some late night munchies to attend to, this may be the right place. The address is as follows:

A-16, Old Klang Rd, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

That iconic sign. Do note that they take 2 shop lots that are separate from each other.
