Food Court Tour @ The Shark , Jalan Burma, George Town

Have you been into a shark before? Me neither. Well if you enter into a food court called the Shark, will it still count? Probably not. But the food here is pretty good though.

Spacious

This massive food court was recommended by my friend Yu Aik, a proud Penangite and a good friend of mine. And this was the first stop in my Penang eating odyssey. This food court is loaded with the usual favourites such as Hokkien mee, laksa and char kuey teow to name a few. As there are specialty shops for some of the other items, I left my stomach to the leadership of my good friend and we ordered a serving of Hokkien mee, Laksa and for dessert, a good bowl of bubur cha cha. It cannot get any more local that this.

Deep red tide

The Hokkien mee was some flavour explosion and it alone is worth any trip to Penang. There is a lot of prawns in one bowl. The soup was sweet and spicy, loaded with the sweetness from the prawns and has deep undertones from the spices. This was one of those few instances where I had rice noodles, or bihun for some, and I think would work better than the usual thick yellow noodles I usually pick.

Mix and match

A hot bowl of Laksa was a hodgepodge of various elements. If you like porky bits this is definitely for you. Roast pork bits, pork blood, fish cake, cockles and tofu puffs, there is so much going on. Systematic chaos, if I say so myself. The coconut infused curry broth was smooth and savoury. If you like your curry broth to be very deep and mellow, then you would enjoy this too.  However, if you like more vibrant flavours and a creamy broth, you might enjoy the Nyonya version better. Still, this is worth the sampling. And I did not regret it.

Purple trouble!

And if you are into creamy delicacies, perhaps the dessert selection for today would satiate that appetite. The bubur cha cha was absolute decadence! It felt like I was drinking pure coconut cream and the purple hue from the boiled purple sweet potatoes and yams  gave this a very unique colour that you do not see anywhere. The sugary broth of this dessert soup had so much flavour too. With a combination of coconut and various sweet potatoes, this was a real star. This would have been great if it was a rainy day, but despite the heat, this was thoroughly enjoyable too.

There are no proper signs. So keep an eye for the roof!

Kudos for Yu Aik in recommending me this place. The food is great, the place is spacious, and everything was reasonable. Each item we ordered as just RM6! Do note that parking can be a little hard to find and that there is no sign outside stating "The Shark". But if you key in its address in Google Maps, you will find it in a jiffy. The address is as follows:

192, Jalan Burma, Kampung Syed, 10350 George Town, Penang
