Mee Rebus @ Nasi Kandar Shaaz, Shah Alam , Selangor

I know it is not common for someone to go to nasi kandar place and have noodles. But hear me out. In a previous work trip back home, I was craving for some mamak style food. And I was fortunate enough to find somewhere near where I was based at during a short lunch break. However, I did not expect myself to find mee rebus.

Mee rebus on the menu? Oh boy.

Well since most of my readers are now expecting Japanese food, it may be apt for me to explain what mee rebus is. Essentially it translates as boiled noodles but it is more than that. it is a fusion of Indian and Chinese elements, where noodles are mixed with a pasembur sauce, which is a type of modern Indian gravy, made out of peanuts, sweet potato and lots of chilli. It also comes with fried fritters and various veggies, mainly bean sprouts and cucumber.

Glorious

It is not what you can get in India for sure, but this is one of the main pillars of Malaysian Indian cuisine. As such, it caught me by surprise that our humble lunch joint, Nasi Kandar Shaaz has that on the menu. I got the one with squid that was standing at RM10.80. At that price? Sign me up! Also I had iced lime tea which stood at RM3.20 on the side. Lucky for me, it did not disappoint.

It glistens!

The portion was massive and on first impressions alone was amazing. Half a boiled squid was there, sitting regally on a bed of noodles, covered in hot nutty sauce. Naturally I attacked the squid first. It was sweet savoury, had a great bite and the chilli sauce combination was just a great assault to the senses. This may be a bit spicy for the Japanese palate but this was just right for me. It was slightly creamy and was just latching on anything that moves.

That delicious squid, and a slice of fresh chilli for extra punch

The fried fritters were pretty good too. They were airy and soft on the inside, yet had a nice crunch on the outside. It also tasted relatively clean, meaning to say that the oil used is fresh. Mamak eateries are notoriously known to recycle oil. So this was a nice surprise. The noodles were so so. Despite being half of the name, it was regular yellow noodles you may get in your regular shopping mall or market. Still, it did the job and was an excellent carriage for the sauce. The main star is the sauce here.

Front of the house.

And within mere minutes I cleared everything down. Man this was good, and the nostalgic flavours really hit the spot. This sort of thing is definitely impossible to find in Japan. As such, whenever I am back home I am sure to head down to a local diner and chow down like a crazed maniac. Ok maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but still not far from the truth. Also I am fairly surprised sa to how good this serving of noodle was. Mamaks are not well knows for such dishes, unless they sell on this sort of stuff. So a pleasant surprise overall. So if you would like to try this for yourself, the address is as follows:

Shaaz Curry House, 1, Jalan Opera F U2/F, TTDI Jaya, 40150 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia

PS: sorry for the short hiatus as I had to go for a last minute work trip last week. Well rest assured that we will be back to our usually scheduled programming! See you all soon.
