Suppli & Wine @ Moshi Moshi Suppli, Daimyo, Fukuoka
During one of my Instagram research for new places to eat (yes this is a thing), I found an ad of an Italian bar that just reopened in Fukuoka, which specialises in the deep fried treats called suppli. And with almost no hesitation, I went there and had probably a very eventful evening.
Here we are! |
Moshi Moshi Suppli is a bar ran by full blooded Italian Lorenzo who has been residing in this side of the country for many years. And his bar is a tribute to his original home country, where wine and the infamous street food suppli are the highlight of the show. Although they look like arancini balls, there are some slight differences. Arancini are from Sicily, especially popular in cities like Palermo and Catania. Supplì, on the other hand, come from Rome and are a classic Roman street food.
My companion for today, Steve Jobs. |
The menu is relatively simple consisting of 3 different flavours, cacio e pepe (pepper and cheese), bolognese and a Fukuoka tribute lemon and mentaiko. However do not let such a modest meny fool you as each ball of rice packs so much punch. My first nibble was the bolognaise which was very deep, earthy and loaded with meaty and tomato flavours.
The texture of the overall package was also pretty good and has a contrast of various elements, Soft on the inside but crunchy and slightly gritty on the outside, it's like a textural playground. The core consisting of gooey cheese was just mind blowing, giving it an extra dimension to flavours and again, textures. This hand held flavour bomb was being paired with the red wine that Lorenzo recommended, this creating the perfect combination.
Epic. |
The next one I had was the lemony mentaiko version which was an absolute star maker. The zesty flavours really paired well with the salty and spicy profile of the mentaiko. The clash of styles makes for an interesting combination and ye the flavours just mix so well as an entire package. In terms of drinks to pair with, you will be in good hands here. Lorenzo will guide you with which wine will pair well with what kind of deep fried goodies you get and if you are interested in having a glass with a suppli, there is a combo set that stands at 1250 yen. But if you are more keen in just having some deep fried rice balls, each hand held treat stands at 600 yen. It should be noted that each rice ball is cooked to order, so a 10 minute wait will be needed but patience is a virtue and you will be greatly rewarded here.
See you soon Lorenzo! |
So if you are looking for a midnight snack that is not that common on Japanese streets or you would like to experience a slice of Italy in Fukuoka, this is definitely a place to be. The address is as below. Thanks Lorenzo for your hospitality. I will definitely be back soon.
