Curry Lunch @ Quatchie Spice Yuruku, Daimyo, Fukuoka
Its time to turn up the heat again! And another plate of curry is now placed in the limelight, full front and center. Quatchie Spice Yuruku, or Quatchie in short, is a Western inspired diner that specializes in curry. This may sound strange for most people, but there is some logic to this. Curry, and spices in general were first brought into Japan via British soldiers and traders. As such, the imagery stuck.
Look at that selection! |
Despite that, rest assured that this place takes their spicy concoctions seriously. The front counter was decked with bottles of spices around the world, literally. The array of ingredients will make any South East Asian happy. As I was there for lunch, there were 2 types up for selection: the roasted spices curry and the luncheon meat keema curry. I was curious on how the second will pop up so luncheon meat it was! A hefty serving of either plate was 950 yen a plate.
This was actually quite nice. |
Once I made my order, the owner went straight to prepping my meal. After shuffling between bottles and mixing a fragrant mix of aromatics, my lunch was served. It was a real sloppy mess. A beautiful mess, but still a mess. Despite that, there was some charm with regard to how things turn out. The luncheon meat somehow did not taste like how I imagined. The flavour was somewhat mild and pleasant. However, I can still feel that patty-like texture. The spices were quite well balanced too. There was a strong kick of cumin and star anise, which is something I like. However, this is something that I can sort of make myself and is a very familiar taste. As such, it may not have impressed me the same way a local Japanese would.

Still, it was filling and kept me very warm during the colder months. And the rice tasted similar to a pilaf, which I would give extra points. Then again, sometimes food does not have to be something that rocks your world. A simple, but comforting meal which can help you keep on going about your day and leave you satisfied, sometimes, is what you need. So with that imagery in mind, let's say I left very happy. Although I did leave with a very strong stench of the spices that were used earlier. So be warned!
Front of the house. |
So if you are around this part of Daimyo and would like a decent plate of curry, despite my somewhat lukewarm review, you cannot go wrong here to be honest. And if you like your food somewhat spicier than your usual Japanese person, then this is the place to be. Fancy a go, then the address is as follows:
2 Chome-10-2 Daimyo, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka, 810-0041
