Coffee and Toast @ Lung Ann Refreshments, Malacca

There is nothing quite like a good cup of coffee with some toast on the side. It may be basic, but when the basic essentials are on point, even the basics will feel glorious. And on a recent trip back home, I was reacquainted with this classic combo.

Old school!

Simple and unpretentious like the food it serves, Lung Ann Refreshments serves up this classic combo all day round. So if you are one of those that like to have breakfast foods for any time of the day, this is the place to go. In fact, I went here after a round of chicken rice. I was already packed to the brim after that amazing meal (click here to read more). But there is always space for something sweet. Also, it was definitely a good time to get my afternoon dose of caffeine.

Simple, but still amazing.

And a good time it definitely was. The coffee hit all the right notes. It was rich, silky, and had great depth. It was not bitter nor does it have any offending acidity. Everything was well balanced. Spiked with a little sugar, and this turned out to be a great cup of joe. Not to mention that it came in that old-fashioned style cup. Blast from the past indeed.

Too good

Tagging alongside it was toast slathered with kaya and butter. This classic combination is always a winner. It is quite hard to get kaya in Japan. So having this delightful coconut custard after so long was refreshing indeed, no pun intended.

What great colour!

The toast was perfectly grilled and crispy on the first bite. However, the center was still moist and slightly delicate. It had a great bite though. It should be noted that this bread is not your regular loaf but the soft Hainanese-style loaf, which is one of my favourites. It just gives off a better texture when you toast it, compared to other forms of bread. It is airier too, giving it pockets for the kaya and butter to latch onto. Just sheer perfection.

An absolute star.

This breakfast meal after lunch was not too bad in terms of the price as well. The coffee stood at a modest RM1.50 while the toast was for RM2. Pretty decent, especially considering the "cost performance" involved, this was a super bargain.  If you are into retro-style coffee spots, I cannot recommend this place enough. They have been around for many decades and are somewhat of a local legend around these parts. So if you need a place to get a simple but satisfying pick-me-up, then the address is as follows:

93/807, Lorong Hang Jebat, 75200 Malacca
