Roasted Duck @ The Travelling Duck, Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur

Although not commonly featured, I absolutely love duck meat. It is one of those few birds that has a gamey, red-meat sort of profile. Probably because it is. And during my previous trip home, I was fortunate enough to try out some old-fashioned roasted duck from a new establishment that is making waves, the Travelling Duck.

What do we have here?

It should be noted that although its decor is inspired by the British, the place actually sells Chinese food. This is mainly because they source their prized ducks from the UK. It gives off an interesting vibe, which is similar to an English tea house. But with Chinese food. Speaking of which, it was pretty good.

So tasty

My party of 3 ordered the half portion of a duck which came with some steamed buns and various accouterments. The duck was first deboned, which made for a convenient eating experience. it was pretty good, to be honest. The meat was tender while the skin had a nice crunch to it. The whole thing was seasoned well and had a slightly fruity kick to everything. I suspect the copious use of cloves and aniseeds.

Edible pillows

The buns were plain mantou which was soft, fluffy, and had a great bite. When you sandwich the duck meat in between and slather a bit of hoisin sauce, it was nothing short of perfection. It was so good that I forgot to take a photo of that handheld awesomeness. Apologies for the lack of professionalism. But at least I can vouch from personal experience, it was really tasty. The duck and buns stood at RM118.

Odd but tasty.

However, it was not just duck that we had. To round out the meal, we ordered some fried rice. More specifically, with seafood and basil. It tasted pretty fancy and had a complex aftertaste. The basil gave it a slight Thai-style hint, while the seafood provided that classic Chinese flair a good high-end restaurant would have provided for. A bit unusual in terms of fried rice, but it was a good kind of unusual. This plate of fried rice came at a hefty RM32. To wash it all down, we ordered a pot of tea. Standing at RM10.50 for 3 of us, it was not too bad. You definitely need something like this to help push the grease from the duck down.

A night cap

Although I do feel the food is slightly overhyped, it was still delicious and worth the time to visit. I a not too sure if I tasted anything particularly special from the British raised ducks, but then again, I have not eaten duck for a very long time. So maybe my taste buds may have forgotten how regular duck tasted. Still, a top recommendation. There are a few branches around the KL city area. But if you are interested in trying out the outlet that we have visited, it is the one in Mid Valley. The address is as follows:

S-046 & 047, Second Floor Mid Valley Megamall Mid Valley City, Lingkaran Syed Putra, 59200 Kuala Lumpur.
