Mexican Dinner @ Las Carretas, USJ 10, Subang Jaya

This has been a long time coming, and I have been looking forward to writing this for quite some time. Being one of the local restaurant kings in the Subang area, this is the place where I recommend to family and friends if they want to get great satisfying Mexican grub. Beat that Chilli's. Las Carretas has been around for decades, so much so that I do not even remember when they open. But when I crave for a proper taco, this place comes to mind. And after a long hiatus, my family visited this place not to long ago.

Ah nostalgia.

The first thing that comes to mind when you enter the place is the ambiance. It feels like you have entered into another country. Dimmed lights, sombreros being hung on the wall and Latin inspired murals, it was, and still is great stuff. There is also a bar in the ground floor and the upper floor, with tequila on tow, giving out that true Mexican feel.

Double trouble

What I usually order is their tacos. Simple, to the point, and yet very satisfying, I order this most of the time, second to their burrito. And for this time I ordered the chicken. Each serving comes with two crunchy taco shells, stuffed with grilled chicken and tomato rice. Topped with some cheese and sour cream and you have a real banger of a meal. This twin trouble was for RM29.50

Sizzling. The condiments are at the background.

If you want something more substantial, the fajita set is a sure-fire choice and it is what my father usually orders. Hot off a stone grill, the grilled meat and peppers go well with an array of condiments like cheese and guacamole once it is wrapped in a soft tortilla. A hit with most regulars as well and something I highly recommend. For my father, he likes chicken the best, although the beef set works very well too. I mean, you cannot go wrong with grilled meats. The chicken was for a tag of RM36.50.

Crunch!

If you are into seafood, there is a modest selection too. My mom chose the "calamari flautas" this time, which is akin to a squid spring roll. But that description does not do justice. Packed with loads of flavour, the content of those rolls were pretty amazing. The stuffing was made using a good amount of squid, feta cheese and jalapenos. Classic salty and spicy you get in Mexican food. The tortilla wrapping was fried till golden brown and was crunchy to the touch. This was quite special. And like with most dishes here, it comes with some tomato rice too. This stands for RM33.50.

Solid.

My brother opted for a seafood dish today as well.Called "Oaxacan Shrimp", this was a combination of various types of seafood, and its not just shrimp that came along. Mussels and squid too made an appearance. Imagine a more zesty seafood stew and you get the idea. This was a flavour explosion too. And this stands for  slightly more hefty RM43.50. But its seafood right?

The fancy upstairs bar.

Hearty, tasty and just plain comforting, I finally reminded myself after so long why my family keeps coming back. The food is great, prices are affordable and they are miles apart from the common chains you see in your local mall.

The downstairs dining area is really nice too.

One of the main pillars when it comes to the local restaurant scene, a visit here is never a bad decision. Keen in coming over and trying things out for yourself? The address is as follows:

No 29 USJ 10/1F, 47620 UEP Subang Jaya, Subang Jaya.

Neon dreams.
