Food Court Tour @ Medan Selera Stadium, Ipoh Garden, Ipoh
If I told you that we are going to a stadium but not for sports, will you believe me? Well it may be a good thing to reconsider your assumptions, as great street food can be found by a stadium. Oh yeah, it is a thing in Ipoh.
A crowded weekend |
A hot hub for locals and tourists alike, "Medan Selera Stadium " is the hawker centre of the Ipoh Sports Complex, affectionately called the Stadium by the locals. Some stalls open during different hours, but this seems to be more of a breakfast spot. It stretches around the diameter of the Stadium and is a great place for some humble street eats and alot of the usual suspects are there.
Beauty as white as snow. |
And speaking of usual suspects, a trip to Ipoh is not complete if you have not had their famous soy delicacies. And a good way in sampling it is by having not one but two, which is tau huey with soy milk. The sweet syrup can retire for now, and this double soy combo was further complimented with black sesame tang yuen. Called the 3 in 1, this great treat is available from some of the drinks stalls and is a joy to have. Contrasts of textures but having a common flavour profile brings them all together. A must order.
Real porky goodness |
If you are into something more substantial, then why not have congee instead? A staple breakfast dish, this classic Chinese porridge was loaded with goodies. And when I mean goodies, I do really mean it. At the bottom of the bowl is loaded with organ meat like tongue and tripe. There is a good amount of lean meat too. And to top it all off, were chucks of golden and crispy dried intestines. A savoury bowl indeed and it will for sure fill you up.
Silky smooth. |
But what if you are not so adventurous? Another classic breakfast item, the chee cheong fun is also something worth taking note. With the classic choices of char siew or prawns or my favourite, both, you really cannot go wrong with this one. The rice rolls were silky smooth and the fillings gave it a chunky elements, which I like. I think you can see that contrasting textures is a common element over here.
Noodles! |
If you are a fan of noodles, you are in luck too as this area is loaded with several noodle shops. I had a serving of hearty and soupy yong tau fu noodles. The fish paste was very fresh and supple. The soup was clear and yet very satisfying. Unfortunately however, the noodles were mediocre, but it gets the job done. Still, a good bowl nonetheless.
Time to get caffeinated! |
And no Ipoh breakfast would be complete unless you have coffee. The classic iced coffee is a must order and any drink stall can whip you up this special tonic and it might probably be the best coffee you ever had.
One of the many stalls at the premises. This was where I got the 3 in 1 and the iced coffee. |
There are still alot of stalls I have yet to try and it is just not possible to have them all in one go. The food is relatively cheap and all the food have highlighted ranges from RM3 to 6. And the coffee was just RM2. If you are a fan of cheap eats that will make you come back for more, then the stadium is a place that you need to visit. Fancy a go? Then the address is as follows:
Medan Selera Stadium
Jalan Ghazali Jawi,
Ipoh Garden,
Kompleks Sukan Ipoh,
