Mamak Breakfast @ The Malaysian, USJ 10, Subang Jaya
This place is beginning to become my new favourite breakfast spot now. And for good reason.

The Malaysian Banana Leaf Rice, or just The Malaysian in short, is a new restaurant located in the bustling area of Taipan Business Centre in USJ 10. And like most mamak style restaurants, they serve the usual suspects like roti canai, thosai and idli. And begin the first time there, that was what we ordered.
Befitting a museum |
Interior wise, the place is new and very clean, and it does not have that stifling feel when you are in a mamak. There are also some old historic photos of events around the country, some even were from the pre-Independence years. They really put the moniker the Malaysian some serious thought.
The classic |
The roti canai here is top notch. Somewhat flaky on the outside and soft yet chewy on the inside, what more can you ask for? Granted I have tasted better elsewhere, but it was done really well. I would like to have a bit more ghee in my roti canai, although for people who like their flatbreads a little less greasy, then this will serve you nicely. The curries are not bad, especially the dhal. It has a lot of flavour and once you add some sambal in, it becomes a explosive concoction. I do feel that their fish curry is lacking a bit of punch, maybe a bit more garam masala would do the trick. But thats just my opinion.
Real heavenly |
Their thosai is my favourite actually. Called, dosa by some people, this rice pancake is done very well. The outer side is very crispy and felt almost like a crisp. The inner part is fluffy and is a bit airy. But what I like the most is the coconut chutney that comes with it. If fact, that is the star. Both the red chilli one and the standard white ones are very flavourful.
Some serious good stuff here. |
They are a bit chunky and a bit smoky. Probably the spice mix that went into them have been perfected by the chefs. It is so good, that I even think the chutney can go well with french fries.
Another winner |
Idli here is also done well. A bit similar to the dosa, it has more substance and looks like a steamed cake instead of a flatbread or a pancake. This was fine if you like to have something less crunchy. One thing that puts this above the dosa is that it can absorb the chutney like a sponge. And absorb it does, changing it into some flavour bomb. The idli on its own is quite alright, a bit bland but has a subtle sweetness. Once it is fused with that coconut potion however, it changes its personality. Did I mention that the chutney was amazing?
Really nice of the owners to get out of their own way to help out. |
What sets this place apart, besides the food, is in fact that this place is an autism friendly establishment, to cater for children with certain special needs. That is a really good thing, as it can be hard to bring your family out if not many people understand their requirements and problems.
A view from the inside. |
Overall, this is a fine spot for some morning fuel and the food is standard pricing, costing from RM 2 to RM 5 depending on what you order. They do serve banana leaf rice on other times of the day. And perhaps you might see a second post on that. But if you would like to try the banana leaf before I do, or you would like to have breakfast there, the address is as follows:
24, Jalan USJ 10/1B, USJ 10,
Taipan Business Centre, 47620 Subang Jaya
