Yong Tau Fu @ Bee Bee Hiong, Bukit Baru, Malacca
Some say this is overrated but I personally feel that there is not enough attention to this great eating spot! At least not as overrated as that one in Ipoh under a tree.
A line in front of the shop. And the inside is already full! |
Bee Bee Hiong has been a constant for the locals of Malacca especially when it comes to breakfasts. If you have been following the blog by now, noodles is a staple in the standard Malaccan diet. Not many people associate Malacca with noodles, but it is a hidden gem which local will slurp and gulp with utmost satisfaction. Adding yong tau fu to the mix, you will then get Bee Bee Hiong. And it is a winning combo.
Located a bit far off from the main attractions and city center, this kopitiam is located in a shop lot unit of a residential district. Definitely a bit out of the way for most tourists, which is the reasons why locals flock here. And flock here, they will. If you are keen in coming over, do make sure you arrive early. If you arrive around 9 am, be prepared to sit outside, which I did.
Choices oh choices |
Like most yong tau fu places, you wait in a line in front of the ensemble of goodies and pick what you like and place it in a bowl. Once you have made your selection, pass it to the counter so they will proceed with the final prep. At this stage, you can ask for noodles with your selection and it will come to you soon enough.
My final selection. |
Of course the waiting game was a tough one to play. Many people came before me and being very hungry, my patience was somewhat tested. The hassle was worth the food though. Like any good food places, you need to give and take a little.
Look at that backlog! |
What came by was really noteworthy. Each yong tau fu piece was absolutely delicious. The fish paste was bouncy and supple. It even had a kick back when you bite, fighting the pressure when your teeth are forcing through when you chew in.
Breakfast is ready! |
The flavour was well balanced and slightly sweet. And most importantly, it was pure. No artificial flavours not fillers in this joint. Everything is made fresh and made out of 100% fish. The soup itself was clean and sweet, infused with the flavours of the fish paste that it was cooked with.
Magic in a bowl |
All the yong tau fu pieces were good. The chili, brinjals, stuffed tofu. Everything was on point. A special mention however, needs to be made to the stuffed bitter gourd. I am not a huge fan of it, and I do not mind eating it. But this place made it special. The stuffing is not ordinary fish paste but it is flavoured with chillies and then fried before placing into a soup.
Just delicious |
Noodles itself was also noteworthy, Spiked with garlic oil, soy sauce and pork lard, it is standard fare for most Malaccan noodle shops. But when standard fare is this good, a shout out is in order. One thing about this place though, is that the coffee is also outstanding. People usually will give a pass for coffee at places like this. But it was rich and deep, with a hint of sugar. beans are sourced locally and no espresso machine here. Everything is brewed using a muslin sock.
Front of the house. |
This is a hidden get that deserves all the praise it gets. Delicious, simple, honest and satisfying, this is a yong tau fu place that I go time and time again. Also, did I mention that it is also quite cheap? Each item is just RM1 and noodles stand at RM1 onwards depending on size. Taking a trip to Malacca soon? Why not drop over? The address is as follows:
No. 27/27-1, Jalan BPM 14,
Taman Bukit Piatu Mutiara,
75150 Bukit Piatu, Melaka.
PS: If you are keen on trying out noodles and yong tau fu but this joint is too inconvenient for you, I recommend here if you are in the center of Bukit Cina
