Chicken Rice Balls @ Huang Chang, Taman Damai, Malacca
There are a few iconic dishes in Malacca to sample. And if you say chicken rice, the word "balls" are not far behind. Do not have any funny ideas ok?
Welcome to Malacca! |
The main stops for most tourists would probably be Jonker, near the bridge. I have given up patronising there long time ago. The crowds are just way to intense, there is always an unimaginable line and packed with tourists. Of course, I am not dissing tourists. Malacca is after all, a tourist hot spot and vacationers are the life blood of this place. However, this will lead to the watering down of our strong and vibrant food heritage just to feed the masses. So if you want to have something really awesome (which I have mentioned in most Malacca posts), you need to go where the locals go to.
Front of the house. |
Huang Chang is such a place and I have eaten here from time to time and leaving satisfied. It is a simple kopitiam joint located at Taman Damai, a suburban part of the town. So, you need a car to get there. The premises do sell a variety of food items and drinks, but you go to a chicken rice place for chicken rice now right? That is a no brainer. And you get good ones at that.
Wait, am I suppose to share? |
Disclaimer, I have to say they are not super mind blowing, but it is simple comfort food. Honest, filling and satisfying, simple comfort food. The balls are made by hand, evidenced by their inconsistent shape. But that is just one factor to consider really.
Size comparison. Still delicious. |
It is well flavoured, with hints of garlic and ginger in the background when you have one of those carb bombs in your mouth. Paired with that zesty chilli sauce, and you get a killer combo. And one ball is 20 cents. They are tiny though. But if you consider the size and volume, it is not to bad. After all, It is about RM 2 for extra rice in some shops in KL. So the price is somewhat justified.
Look at that glow. |
The chicken is simple steamed chicken, which actually is really good. Despite being standard fare, it is not something that one should take lightly. Many places tend to overcook the chicken, or worse, undercook it. The chicken here is moist and sweet, laced with that soy and sesame sauce combo which is synonymous with chicken rice. A great treat and to balance off the carbs you have with some protein on tow. Chicken is priced based on portion size, but as an estimate, an RM5 portion can feed one person just right.
Loaded plate |
If you need some variety on the side you can get the street food platter. Essentially, its a hei pneah (prawn cracker) combo. With fish cakes, smoked tofu, fried beancurd skin and of course, prawn fritters and prawn crackers, it does add some extra elements to your overall dining experience. Its decent, but you probably can get something similar elsewhere. So unless you are really craving for this, you probably do not have to bother with this one. This plate is RM8.
A reminder to all customers. Do read it before ordering. |
There have been differing views of this place as of late, with rave reviews from Trip Advisor to one star points on Google. But all I can say is do judge it with your own eyes. However, I would visit this place again for some good grub.
Another view of the premises. |
There are other options that are just as good or better, but Huang Chang has always been one of my go to spots. Do note that it gets very crowded after 9.30 so better get there early. Fancy a go? The address is as follows:
376, Jalan B B 1, Taman Damai, 75350, Malacca
