Tau Huey @ Bentong Tau Fu Sdn Bhd, Bentong, Pahang

If the earlier post on ice cream has tickled your fancy to more sweet treats or if you are more keen on trying something warmer, do not fret. As the next stop will bring you to a warming and satisfying bowl of soy pudding. 

A humble interior

Located near its central market, the Bentong Tofu Company, or Bentong Tau Fu Sdn Bhd sells soy based delicacies. Well its a no brainer, given that name. And one if its specialties, is the tau huey.  They do sell other soy based products like tofu puffs, soy milk and proper tofu blocks.

And like most tau huey places, it only consists of 2 things, the soy pudding and the syrup. Do take note that this is more of a stand than a proper stall or restaurant, so seats are very limited. I actually had to stand to have my soy dessert. Be that as it may, it was still pretty good.

So delicate to the touch, it falls apart so easily.

The pudding was smooth and silky to the touch. It has a floral and nutty after taste, like how any soy pudding should. The syrup was made out of brown sugar and infused with a good helping of  Bentong ginger, which gives it a pungent and spicy kick. This would have been a great confectionery on a rainy day. It was still enjoyable though, despite the heat. 

A clean bowl is an endorsement like no other.

A bowl of this was relatively cheap, with a generous portion costing RM1.50. Tau huey has always been seen as a budget item, so no surprises there with that price tag. Yet, despite its reputation locally and out of state, I think its reputation is justified. It does not ride on its coattails and rip of tourists based on reputation alone. Then again, most tau huey places are better than Ipoh's infamous Funny Mountain (more on that here).

On a side note, this part of Bentong also has a street market that stays open even though the main market has already closed down. It has more street food for sale and is something worth checking out.  Feeling like dropping by? The address is as follows:
