Home style Chinese Dinner @ Home Cooking, Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya
When the name of the place is Home Cooking Restaurant, you know you are gonna get a warming and rustic experience.
A long line awaits us. Note the kitchen at the back. |
Introduced by some family friends, my family was introduced to a pleasant surprise. Tucked deep within Sungai Way, this humble corner unit serves a variety of Chinese dishes. After some research, only did I realised that this establishment is already very popular. So popular in fact, that we had to wait for 30 minutes before we were seated. Was it worth the wait? Read on.
As this was the first time being here, we let our friends do the choosing of the dishes. And what appeared on our table was unpretentious, rustic, and honest grub.

Simple yet glorious. Another contender is not far behind. |
The chicken we ordered was a simple steamed-style chicken. Cooked with soy sauce and with some aliums, it was simple. But simple flavours that worked. The chicken was free range, so it had a lot of bite. As it was lightly flavoured, the sweetness of the chicken was not compromised. It was a ironic mix of soft and sweet yet strong and bold chicken aroma. The soy and scallions added a light layer of additional elements, which help elevate the chicken. A dish that alot of people can do but can go wrong, due to how little you can compromise or maneuver around. A must order.
A royal close up, pun intended. |
Not far behind was a spicy stir fry, which we like to call the Four Heavenly Kings. A very popular stir fry with a variety of different veggies, like eggplant and long beans, this one was done well also. The chilli sauce that went in had a lot of depth, with a kickback consisting of dried shrimp. It was a bit salty, which is to be expected as this stir fry is meant to be eaten with white rice. And the rice does give it some balance. I particularly liked the eggplants. Deep fried before hand, it was sweet and slightly mushy. Imagine the core of a french fry. Yeap, it had the similar texture. Coated with the glorious prawn infused chilli sauce, expect some explosive flavour.
Look at the gloss! |
Char siew came not long after, and it is the main attraction of Home Cooking Restaurant. It is so famous in fact, that almost every table has a serving of it. But how does it fare?
Oh so sinful! |
The outside layer was coated with the marinating syrup. Sticky and slightly smoky, the external part of the meat was well flavours and had the necessary char marks which makes char siew such a delectable morsel.
With pronounced layers of fat, it was loaded with straight up porky impact. Not something your doctor will recommend. Still amazing though.
Le omelette... |
Even the omelette was done well. As we had 6 of us on the table, we thought we would need another dish to ensure everyone was filled up. The Fu Yong style omelette is a staple in most tai chao places and should be easy to make one that is good. May God pity the fool who had to eat bad Fu Yong. But I digress. Loaded with veggies and with traces of prawn, it was a good omelette. And like the rest of the dishes, it goes well with rice. We ordered a plate of fried lettuce as well, but as it was a boring dish, I did not take any pictures of it.
Let the chow down begin! |
With a rustic and honest ambiance and friendly staff, you do feel as though you are eating in someone's home. As such, Home Cooking does provide you what home cooking does. Well executed dishes and friendly staff, this is a place that I might visit again.
Another angle of the interior. |
The food is also quite affordable. As this was a treat from our friends, I am not too sure about the prices of each dish. However, the total was for RM97, which includes rice. Not a bad deal I must say, especially for the quality of the food involved.
Ah! I am far behind! But in any case, if a national paper says its good, it has to mean something right? |
This is a place I cannot recommend enough, and seems that TV shows like Ho Jiak and even newspapers like the Star have beaten me to it! If you wanna give this establishment a try, the address is as follows:
555, Jalan SS9A/2, Sungai Way, 47300 Petaling Jaya.
