Bak Kut Teh Breakfast @ Ah Her and Samy, Taman Berkeley, Klang
When in Rome, do what the Romans do. And when in Klang, a breakfast loaded with pork is the way to go.
There are various options in getting your bak kut teh fix in this town, as it is the local specialty. However, as there are so many variants to the dish, each shop has its own take and its own plus points. Recommended by some local acquaintances, Ah Her and Samy is the place to go for some porky breakfast.
The easily understood menu, behind the hob and stack of bowls. |
We were there relatively early on a Saturday morning, about 8.30 am and as such the place is not that crowded. The premise is simple, it is just bak kut teh by the person serving and a plate of rice. Nothing else. No mushrooms, no tofu, no bean curd skin. Just meat, soup and rice. And the menu is very simple being RM 10 for a bowl of meaty soup and RM 1 for a plate of rice, regardless of portion size.
Look how it glistens! |
The simplicity is to your advantage as well, as the food arrives fairly quickly. And the verdict? Meaty, strong and herbal in profile, the soup was well balanced. But funnily enough, the soup is not the star. Instead it is the meat. The pork was tender to the bone and flakes easily. The herbs permeated into the meat and the aftertaste of garlic sweetness is evident.
Great to the last grain. |
The rice has also been flavoured with garlic oil. So no plain white over here. The rice is not too overpowering, which can be a problem to certain bak kut teh joints. But not here. It was the perfect condiment to the porky soup, which was more akin to a stew. My only complaint on the rice was if there were fried shallots in it, which I feel would have elevated the rice and my breakfast to another level.
The real money shot right here. The meat was incredibly moist and tender. |
Still, it is a great way to kick start the morning. Definitely not as healthy as oatmeal and eggs, but you gotta live once in a while right? And when you need something porky and fatty but am tired of a Full English, this rice and soup combo hits the right notes.
The unmistakable sign. Sounds more like a rock ballad duo than a porky joint. |
This shop is relatively famous already and can be easily found online as many a food hunter have written about this. Anyways for the sake of completeness, here is the address for this fine establishment:
