Prawn Fritters @ Tan Jetty Prawn Fritters , Tan Jetty, George Town

Nothing epitomizes street food than a scene of deep fried goodies being prepped by a roadside. And this, dear readers is what I live for. Prawn fritters and meat rolls (aka lor bak for the Penangites) are a staple street food snack which can be found in most places within the island side of the state. And a lot of them are pretty good. However, there seem to be a consensus on which one is the best, or the very least, one of the best. And it is the stall in Tan Jetty.

Turn up the heat!

Technically this stall does not have an actual name and its just called Tan Jetty Prawn Fritters as it has a sign that says "Prawn Fritters" and its in Tan Jetty. Well, at least it tells people where it is in the map effectively I guess. Other than the fritters, the establishment also sells the aforementioned meat rolls and be being a greedy boy, had 2 of each.

I need to improve on my plating skills. First is on getting a plate!

But as the place does not have a proper place to eat, most people actually take away. And unfortunately, that would mean that I need to have this back in my hotel. Fortunately, it was just a 5 minute walk. Sounds like a lot of trouble? Probably. Was it worth the trouble? You bet it was.

Deep fried bliss.

The fritters are chewy and doughy with that golden crackling exterior that making sinking your teeth in a multidimensional experience. And this was contrasted with the prawns, Speaking of the prawns, you can actually feel and taste them! Some roadside stalls are stingy with these sea critters. But this was great. The whole deep fried confection was well seasoned and splashing it with a good amount of chilli sauce that came with it just make things so much better. Sweet, tangy and with that tinge of heat, it makes for a great afternoon snack.

Porky

The meat roll was no slouch. Sure, it does not score much in the crunchiness department. But the flavours in this was astounding. The meat was chunky yet the chunks were small enough as to not making chewing a chore. Flavors were top notch and it was almost akin in having minced bacon wrapped into a log. You can taste a lot of sweetness and savoury elements in that meat log. Get your mind out of the gutter ok?

A modest set up. Right behind a house no less!

This was some modest street snack that is bombastic in its flavours. What can I say, its just great and does deserve the praise that most newspaper and food blogs dish out to it. Also, its quite affordable as one fritter was for RM1.30 and the meat roll was for RM1.90. So if you are in the area, or if you are in Penang at all you will be doing a disservice to yourself if you do not come and have at least a few pieces. Eat by the roadside, eat in your hotel or in your car, it does not really matter as your taste buds will thank you for it. Fancy a go? Then the address is as follows:
