Porridge @ Restoran Tasty Porridge, USJ 10, Subang Jaya

With the weather being uncertain lately and the rain coming back in full swing, its time to get some thing to keep you warm. And porridge will fulfill that task just nicely.

Check out the crowd!

The name does says it all, and "Tasty Porridge" is not some sales gimmick. It does live up to that name. Located in the Taipan business district, this shop sits in the heart of Subang Jaya. And it is crowded on most days.

Comfort in a claypot

Being a porridge place it is a no brainer that it is porridge that you need to have. They have a huge variety of Chinese style flavours and fillings. From simple fish and pork to more sophisticated ones like one with organ meat and frog. So pick your poison, literally. Being a bit on the traditionalist side, I usually go for the minced pork, which I always find satisfying. The congee texture is silky smooth and the rice granules have broken down to a slimy consistency, and I mean that in a good way.

So silky

The white stuff is surprisingly flavourful. I would not be surprised if it is cooked in chicken broth or pork stock. The toppings are also good. Simple street food style porridge, but good nonetheless. The minced pork used is generally quite fresh and it is not too intense. It is well seasoned and just tickles the cockles of your heart.

There is alot of century egg here. And they are not cheap.

My father's favourite is the chicken and century egg, which I enjoy too. The preserved egg adds a smoky and deep edge to the porridge and the chicken a little more sweetness. The base porridge in general tastes the same but the toppings you pick will surely alter the experience somewhat. And not to mention the price, with prices range from RM5 to about 10 depending on your toppings.

Tasty

If you like a bit more variety, you can also opt to have some main dishes to follow. The claypot herbal chicken is lipsmackingly gorgeous. The herbs and dried goji seeds adds a floral dimension to the dish and once you have it, you can sense an aftertaste of licorice too.

Not part of the doctor's recommended diet. But still good though

Another recommended dish is their fatty belly of pork. Braised to perfection, this was deep, savoury and somewhat sweet. The bottom is also loaded with pickled greens. So maybe that is where the sweetness comes from. This can go well with rice extremely well and also the plain congee. You can have this with the porridge with toppings, you would probably still enjoy it, but there will be a clash of flavours and the contrast may not be to your liking. I definitely prefer this with the plain congee, which they do serve. Such main dishes stands for about RM15 to 30, depending on the type and size.

Front of the house.

Simple, filling and warming, this is some serious comfort food. It is reasonably priced and the quality is always consistent. Do watch out for the crowds though as it can be very packed, especially for dinner. As such, I recommend that you arrive here early. If you arrive after 8, be prepared to wait. Or you can come over during lunch, where it is much more empty, even on weekends. Fancy a go? The address is as follows:

19, Jalan USJ 10/1, Taipan Business Centre, 47620 Subang Jaya, Selangor

A quieter dining experience during lunch.
