Dinner @ Chop Beeng Cheong, Kampung Lapan, Malacca

This is nothing short of a pilgrimage. And after being away for so long from this joint, it is warming to see that it still has its old charms, but of course with new price tags unfortunately. Also this is somewhat nostalgic, as this place was once a point for an article when the blog just started out. Man, this has been a while. And looking that I have much improved since then, it is high time I give you all something that deserves the right attention and also to give Chop Beeng Cheong the proper respect it deserves. And hence, this revisit.

Men at work

Many things changed since my previous post back in September 2017. Politicians have changed, the climate has changed and my bank account has changed (not for the better). But Chop Beeng Cheong stayed the same, well except the prices of some of its food.

The classic

The oyster omelette was still the glorious plate of eggs and shell fish that you can find. Simple, but stunning and packed with flavour, your patience is tested before it comes over to your table. The omelette batter is still the same familiar flavour that I loved. If you like stuff fried with alot of garlic, this is for you. If you love char kuey teow, this is for you too.

Shy away of you do not like oysters.

Salty, savory and tasted of the ocean, the small bits of oysters are like pockets of intensity that adds a dimension of texture and aroma. This dish has to be eaten with chillies, and the chillies added a further punch of flavour. It still stood at a modest price of RM9, which once again is a gourmet experience on a budget.

Another old faithful.

Its nearby neighbour unfortunately is not that anymore. The wan tan noodles are still amazing. Flavoured with a meat sauce with lard, chillies and vinegar, it was zesty and vibrant. A different take to the ones you can get in Klang Valley.  The toppings are still top notch, with char siew and minced pork added to make the meal more complete. I am a big fan of the minced pork as it seems to be spiked with alot of sesame oil, giving it a nutty profile.

Still good though, maybe I should not complain too much.

The wan tans were good too. Well flavoured, it sits well with the clear and slightly sweet soup, which is the common side dish to places like this. Although I have to admit, there are getting a bit too small for my liking. Every slurp was amazing and satisfying. Its just a shame that it is now RM5, a comparable burden to some KL spots.

Such a crowd

I did not get the hot wings this time as the line was way too long and the crowds too heavy. Like most local haunts, be there early or be prepared to wait for a space.

Be that as it may, rest assured that I will come here again and enjoy the usuals that I grew up eating. If you are down for some local treats that is beyond the touristy picks, do come over for some humble grub. Chop Beeng Cheong's address is as follows:

211, Jalan Kenanga 2/16, Kampung Lapan, 75250 Malacca
