Dinner @ Chop Beeng Cheong, Kampung Lapan, Malacca

Known for being a potpourri of flavours, tourists from around the world travel to Malacca for its rich food culture. Usual suspects will be nyonya food, chicken rice and satay celup. Be that as it may, there is actually a vast array of morsels not usually sought out by tourists but thoroughly enjoyed by locals.
Maestros hard at work.

Born and raised in that small but very vibrant state definitely fueled by passion for food and living there for  most of my kindie years and travelling back often, I am confident to say that there are so many delicious places that is not usually on everyone's radar. And Chop Beeng Cheong is one of them.

Having eaten here really since as old as I can remember, this place only sells 3 items: wantan noodles, or chien (oyster omelette) and hot wings. But that is all you need really. One thing about most Malaccan coffee shops is this: they have a few items but are done exceptionally well.

Granted, things are now more pricey than what it used to be. I remembered a time when a plate of wantan noodles was RM 2.50. Times have changed but flavours are still just as good.

Just too good...

Wantan noodles made here are very different than most places. It is drenched with a pork based meat sauce along with chili, compared to the dark soy based ones that is found elsewhere. I like this different take as it tastes lighter and you can still taste the noodles, whereas the soy based type can have the sauce overpower the noodles. Couldn't really remember the price for this one, but I think its about RM4.00.

The star of the table

The oyster omelette is the one I order the most. The owner for the stall cooks each order individually, keeping each serving fresh and crisp. Some places cook many batches at one go, like the one in Malacca Raya, which in the end makes it too soggy. Well each to its own. I personally prefer this one and the lines are smaller, so I cannot complain really. The omelette itself? Vibrant, packed with flavour and a generous servings of oysters. This plate was RM9.00. A must have. With a squeeze of lime, and you have possibly heaven on a plate.

Crispy and juicy. Some chicken outlets should learn a thing or two here

Hot wings are barbecued to perfection. It has a texture similar to peking duck , crispy oily skin but moist interior. It comes with 2 types of sauces: a chili sauce and a sweet sauce. A wing is RM2.40 each (which is the whole wing, tip included)

Front of the house.
Whenever you are in Malacca, do try to make a detour to the place. I usually go there for dinners and if you plan to do so, 6pm is the optimal time as it will be crowded by 7pm. Address is as follows:

211, Jalan Kenanga 2/16, Kampung Lapan, Melaka, Kesibang, 75250
