Food Court Tour @ Malaysia Boleh!, Four Seasons Place, Kuala Lumpur

It has been a while since I had posted a food court tour, and it is about high time that I show somewhere deep in the heart of KL. Malaysia Boleh ! (yea the exclamation mark is part of its name) is a fancy food court that specialises in Malaysian Chinese style street food. Various porky delights are sold here and are generally done quite well.

Some of the views of the premises.

The decor is based on the past images of old Chinese settlements in Malacca and KL. Wooden chairs, lanterns, marble tables and pre-war style architecture are the main hues of the area. it has a nostalgic flavour to the area and has a rustic vibe. A bit contradictory, considering that the Twin Towers are just next door. It looks all fine and everything, but how is the food? Generally I think the food served here is good and has lots of variety. Classics street food options are aplenty and it is up to you to choose what you like best. One of my personal favourites here is the char kuey teow.

Majestic!

Cooked to order, this is a popular item in the food court. Fried till golden brown with pork lard (yes, pork lard!), this noodle dish packs a serious punch. The rice noodles are well caramelised and there is the smoky hint that you get when it is fried vigorously. The Cantonese call it "wok hei" and it comes in the truck loads. And this place does not go easy on the ingredients. The char kuey teow is loaded with chives and cockles. There are even a few fresh prawns in there. But this comes at a rather steep price of RM12 for a large. Do not bother with the small size portion, as it is pretty small and for me personally, it will not fill me up.

This is so fresh that the steam is still coming out

Another similar dish which is also another favourite is the chai tao kueh. The flavour profile is very similar to the char kuey teow, which is a good thing. But the one that sets it apart of course is its base that is made of daikon. Fluffy and crunchy at the same time, this was a real treat to eat. And fried daikon has always been one of my favourite Chinese style street foods. Made to order like the previous entree, the "wok hei" comes to you like a typhoon and lambasted you with flavour. One difference is the inclusion of pickled vegetables, which gives the daikon its distinctive taste, adding some sweetness and salty edge to the overall experience. Also not cheap, standing at RM 10 for a large plate. Still good though.

A chicken close up

If you are up for some rice, this food court does have you covered too. I had the nasi lemak before and I find it to be decent. It is not mind blowing, but at least it ticks all the boxes. The rice is packed with coconut flavour, the sambal is sweet and spicy and the condiments are on point. It comes with a piece of fried chicken wing and the total package is for RM 9. Not too bad if you ask me.

A very loaded bowl

If you need something that has a bit more heat, the curry noodles will sort you out very nicely. The curry broth is thick and strong, but not too spicy. Despite its red exterior, its a bit gentle on the heat factor. Still, it is full bodied and has the herbal and spicy aroma you expect from a curry based broth. Slurping was a lot of fun. Just make sure you do that properly, lest not incur the wrath of your neighbours who have to suffer the splatter. The bowl of noodles also comes with tofu puffs and pieces of chicken, making this probably the most reasonable priced meal here as there is so much going on. A modest bowl of curry noodles stands at a price of RM 9 as well.

Sweet tooth satiated. A good heat buster as well.

Desserts are also a thing to try. Well only one dessert, which is the cendol. But when it is so good, one thing is enough. The shaved ice concoction was beautifully done. The sugar syrup and coconut milk base melded perfectly. The cendol strands were bouncy and flavourful and the ice had a smooth texture. This is probably one of the better cendol bowls out there in KL, and that says alot. And for the price of RM3.50, this is a steal.

The curry noodle stall. One of the many rustic looking stalls in the food court.

As you can see this place is a bit on the pricey side if we are talking about food courts. However, the food is restaurant quality so it is not too bad considering its slightly cheaper from a proper sit down establishment. Being a food court, there will be new shops popping up so the options may be even more varied from the time of this posting.

Chai tao kueh lovingly fried.

One note of caution though, this place is very popular with the office workers here during lunch hours. As such, if you are coming by in the weekdays, be prepared to fight for a table or get the very early. Keen on trying out the stuff I highlighted or taking on the dishes not mentioned here? The address is as follows:

B1-01B, Shoppes at Four Seasons Place, 145 Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur 50450

If you see a sign of signs, then you are at the right spot!
