Chicken Rice @ Lian Kee Chicken Rice, USJ 14, Subang Jaya

It has been a long while since I have been home. Two years in fact! As such, I think it would be a great idea to start things off with some familiar treats. And one of my usual favourites when it comes to comfort food would be chicken rice.

Familiar ground

I would go straight to the chase, this is one of my absolute favourites. A local favourite with lots of fanfare, you can call be biased in my opinion. But whenever I am in need of good chicken rice, this is the place that I would always end up in. It has been over two years since I got here so what has changed?

Today's ensemble

Well, nothing much honestly. The establishment looks just the same, and everything else feels the same. As I was with my family, were ordered a whole half chicken on top of braised pork intestines and a side of bean sprouts. Classic companions if you ask me. And this modest meal stood for a price of RM66. It definitely felt a bit steep but still relatively affordable, if you compared it to my past dining experiences.

Glorious.

But what stayed the same was the flavours that came. Everything was still good as how I remembered it. The chicken was on point. With supple and succulent meat, it was drenched in the classic chicken rice soy sauce. Many locals will know what I mean by that. The flavour of the chicken was kept intact, a testament to careful cooking of the bird.

Tastes better than it looks!

The intestines were a bit different. it has more punch in terms of flavour, as it was braised thoroughly in a concoction of dark soy sauce and various spiced. I spot cinnamon and cloves. However, I know they are not the only suspects. It was well-cooked and had a good bite to it. Some people might not like it, but I grew up eating organ meat. So, this was a welcome addition.

The humble sprout.

The beansprouts are no slouch either. They were crunchy and fresh. Adding an extra layer of freshness to the overall meal, they help cut out some of the grease from the meaty components of the meal. And I like the different textures out there. As you all know by now, I am a big fan of contrasting textures.

One plate to rule them all.

But of course, we cannot ignore the rice component of chicken rice. Fragrant, delightful and toothsome, this was how I remembered it to be. It was already well-flavoured with chicken stock. Yet, it does not overpower the other elements of this humble dinner. An actual winner in my books.

Good to be back.

Long story short, this was a great trip down memory lane. But you would have guessed by now that I have written about this before.
