Burger @ The Onibus Burger, Oichicho, Yamaguchi

Hey everyone sorry for the brief delay in the weekly postings. It may come as a surprise to you, or probably not, but I do travel from place to place in search of great food to eat and for content for the blog. So after some impromptu last minute planning, I ended up in Yamaguchi!

It is a quiet yet beautiful prefecture and has a lot of great sights to visit in the summer, although do note that it is very rural and most places of interest are located far from each other.  But despite that, food is easy to find. Being slightly tired of Japanese food, it was time to take a break and head out for burgers. I do enjoy a good washoku meal. But once you eat Japanese food almost daily, a change of pace would be apt.

Quaint.

After a brief research, I ended up at the Onibus Burger. Located just outside the shopping district in Oichicho, it is a quaint eating spot that looks more like cafe than a burger joint. The menu was quite impressive with the usual double cheese, to their seasonal burgers with mango  (whuuut?).

Such beauty.

I ended up with their trademark Onibus burger. Well if it has its name on it, it has to be good right? And good it was. And when I say substantial, it was indeed substantial! The whole thing had a lot of elements going on and gave it a surprising contrast of textures, flavours and aromas. The beef was fresh and cooked to perfection, with some charred bits which I always enjoy. Onion rings were placed inside for some added crunch, and a whole stack of lettuce gave it some freshness. On top of that, it was filled with two types of sauces, a creamy mayo one and another sweet Thai sauce. It was a very long time since I had sweet Thai sauce. The nostalgia kick was heavenly.

What a stroke of genius!

The burger looked like a beast and the whole thing felt quite substantial in my hand. Speaking of hand, I was very grateful that they have paper pockets to help you hold it, so you do not get your hands messy. Now that is ingenuity!

Mess contained, crisis averted.

The fries were great too. They were more akin to home style wedges, with their skins on and no fuss. Still, they were light, fluffy and had a great flavour to it. This was some high end spud. Enjoyed it thoroughly. I washed everything down with a good old-fashioned can of A&W root beer.

Thirst breaker.

The burger itself, which came with the fries stood at 1220 yen while the root beet was for 250 yen. It may sound steep but the quality of the food was absolutely worth it. Again, I would need to give a shout out to the paper pockets. If only every burger shop does this, it would make eating it a more elegant experience. At least, a less messier one.

Hipster exterior

Yamaguchi may be really out there and may be inconvenient to go to. However, if you are somehow in the area, Onibus burger is a must try. Fancy a go? Then the address is as follows:
