Bangers and Mash @ Spitalfields, Atria Shopping Gallery, Petaling Jaya

I miss hanging out in a good pub. Being a student back in the UK, strapped for cash and with minimal spending power, pubs were a great establishment for a cheap night out and good company. My usual spots back when I was studying in Reading was the Back of Beyond, ran by the JD Wetherspoons company. When I was in London, the Constitution in Camden comes to mind and the Cittie of Yorke was my hunting ground.

A real warm and spacious interior

So, I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped into Spitalfields. Fashioned just like a British pub, it has an ambiance and energy akin to its source material. Located at Atria Shopping Gallery, it is close to the big city, but far enough to avoid that pesky Friday night jam. The decor really makes you feel like you have entered another realm. With dimmed lights and a retro-inspired furniture set, it gives you that feeling that you are in somewhere in London.

Time to get piggy. The frosty pint on the side.

The menu is a mix and match of pub favourites like ribs and sausages, to Malaysian staples like luncheon meat french fries. Hungry for some nostalgia, I quickly headed to the bangers and mash and a pint of beer.

We also ordered a side of luncheon meat french fries (dubbed the piggy fries) as well. The fries were battered with something akin to the coating of a fried chicken and was served with a side of home made barbecue sauce. The sauce was intense and spicy. It has a hint of smokiness which I like and would probably go well with a steak. The fries? They were serviceable, but the portions are a bit on the stingy side. I mean, mince meat from a tin is not that expensive you know. That stood for a steep RM22.

Yum!

Lucky for us, the sausages were able to save the day. Succulent and meaty, the cumberland sausages had alot of impact. The grains of the pork were noticeable, and it was filled with alot of meat juice. The bangers had alot of  character as well. There was a lot of garlic aroma lingering in the background and a noticeable hint of thyme and rosemary. There was probably a hint of tarragon also, but maybe my senses were deceiving me. The mash was no supporting character. Well done and a good carb companion to the sausages. And the whole thing was finished off with an onion gravy.

Not all sausages deserve a close up. This is the exception.

Although the sausages were good, I got to admit that it is a bit steep, standing at a price of RM32.00. However, it is something I really recommend if you have not tried a good pub style banger. If you have yet to try juicy pork sausages because the only thing you had was some artificial stuff from some freezer, prepared to get your mind blown. And blown to bits. And of course, a visit to the pub is never complete with a good pint, which goes well with the sausages.

Front of the house.

The environment is really authentic and laid back, which I love. And it does bring about a great feel of nostalgia. So fancy something different for your Friday nights? Well do drop by to this unique establishment. The address is as follows:
