Steamed buns @ Chaghanmanduaengoloke, Seogwipo

If you have seen some of my previous posts, you know I am a fan of steamed treats. And near the hotel was a modest stall selling just that, steamed treats. In particular, buns and dumplings. It was quite late at night and a fill-em up seem to be more of a better option than a full blown meal.

The steam is like an indirect advertisement. Like Famous Amos and that cookie scent.

Chaghanmanduaengoloke was the place that was able to solve my problems of the late night munchies. And the steam that travels from the shop was an inviting sight. On another note, what is with Koreans and long shop names anyway? I know that the name translates to "good dumplings and croquettes", but alas maybe its my foreign ignorance. Who am I to judge right?

The battleground is set

Anywho, we got ourselves two meat buns and a rice roll. As its just a hawker, there is no tables for us to use. Luckily the hotel is just 3 minutes away and we resumed our gastronomical "duties" there.

Surprisingly delicious

The meat buns were delicious. Full bodied and savoury, it had a filling similar to a pork gyoza but not as intense. The casing of the bun was soft and silky, as it should be. Yet, it was not very filling. It was good for me at the time as it was just to get rid of a night snack craving. Not so good if you want to have a light meal and two perhaps would sort you out. It was ₩1000 a pop, which is pretty reasonable.

A pleasant accident

We also accidentally got ourselves a rice roll, probably due to the miscommunication caused by the language barrier. Still, it was a pleasant surprise. The rice was well cooked and seasoned. There is a hint of vinegar, giving it some depth. It was not too sour though. Being salty and sour, the rice tasted very similar to a sushi maki but it is definitely not. The fillings were mostly pickled vegetables and had a fresh crunch. There is also some crabsticks in it to give it a contrast of flavour. The nori skin was substantial and was able to keep everything intact. That roll however, can be a proper meal and if eaten together with the buns, it probably will. This was ₩2,500 per roll.

A great late night snack and one of the cheaper options out there through out my trip in the island. It was simple, honest and warming. If you are around the area, do give these buns a go. The location is as follows:
