Sake and various other Japanese Kit Kats
Just because the Japanese trip is over doesn't mean the eating has to.

If you are in the mood for a variety of sweets and trinkets, or you really don't know what to buy for souveniers, then Don Quixote is you best bet. To me, it was both. And of course novelty Kit Kats are on top of the list. The one I went to was the branch in Shibuya which was 5 floors tall, which is one of the bigger branches. It is so big, that it is called Mega Don Qiuxote. With a corner of it dedicated to the iconic chocolate bar, I quickly swooped the Kyushu Strawberry and Caramel bars for friends and colleagues. But then how about myself? There were flavours like cheesecake and the usual green tea.
The haul, and its all mine! |
However, I wanted something novel and really unique. In the end I stumbled upon three interesting flavours: wasabi, rum and raisin, and the rare and somewhat prized sake flavour. Both the rum and raisins and sake Kit Kats do have some alcohol in them.
The wrapping is much more creative that the usual red and white. |
And how to they taste? Well, wasabi does has a hit of wasabi, and it was slightly pungent. Imagine rubbing some raw garlic onto white chocolate and you will get the picture. It was surprisingly good. My relatives actually enjoyed it, as it is very unusual. As for the rum and raisin, it was very fruity and the raisin flavour is very obvious. The rum is not very pronounced although you definitely have an alcoholic after taste for it. The sake? It was good, and you can actually taste the sake. But flavour-wise, it was very subtle so some might find it unimpressive. It does make a special gift though, especially if that someone is a sake or shochu connoisseur, like myself.
Without the wrapping. From left to right: sake, rum and raisin, and wasabi |
Regardless of the flavours though, any one of the three easily trumps the standard milk chocolate bar we are used to know. Definitely something special and a great gift for friends and family who are fans of chocolate.
