Omurice @ Kissa Tarako, Imaizumi, Fukuoka

Hands down, this is the best omurice that I have ever had in my life. There is no exaggeration. It truly is. Even though I do eat this classic yoshoku staple once in a while, it does not really make a lasting impact for me to write it down and place it in the blog. But when the egg itself was sealed with a kiss, what else do you need?

| Extra points for the interior designer |
Kissa Tarako is a classic style coffee house with modern sensibilities. Sleek modern design with a classic Showa style coordination, it was a sight to behold. And when you lay your eyes on their stained glass installment, you know you are here for something pretty special. As their main star is their omurice, it was a no brainer for me to get it. It was a modest price too, standing at 1300 yen. As it is a yoshoku coffee house you can expect classic pasta dishes and hambagu with rice alongside coffee based drinks. But that will be a story for another day as the main focus is this eggy rice treasure.

The type of omelette you get for this dish is the one where it becomes a casing for the rice instead of a rolled up omelette that is placed on top. As such, the egg conceals what the rice looks like, providing a nice surprise once you do. A simple cut into using my spoon was the indication I know it will be great. The egg just caved in with no resistance like a custard! The softness was akin to the laws of physics being kicked aside. Because of this texture and moisture, it then clutches onto that rice with relative ease despite being so light.

And the rice was no slouch either. it was not only cooked in tomato sauce, it was as though it was cooked in bolognaise. You can see bits and pieces of onion and meat instead of regular ketchup. I do like just plain ketchup, but that is probably why I find this eggy rice dish a bit unremarkable to highlight here. But now, when something like this comes along, I am now ready for anything! The soft egg combined with that incredibly delicious rice made eating everything so easy. Slowly spoonful after spoonful, the rice just evaporated into thin air. Ok, it actually went down my gullet but the eating experience was so pleasant that I could just dig in with relative ease. The rice was so flavourful and the meat chunks provided that extra texture that I like. Imagine mapo tofu and rice but instead of tofu its egg. That was how it felt like.

The saddest part of this meal was when I cleared the plate. It was something I feel I can just keep on eating until my stomach starts to ache. One thing for sure, I will never look at omurice the same way again. And may order the large portion standing at 1500 yen for my revisit. So if this does not excite you to give this place a visit, I do not know what will! But if you do decide to come here, the address is as follows:
〒810-0021 Fukuoka, Chuo Ward, Imaizumi, 1 Chome−13−21 1B
