Thai Dinner @ Thai Moment, USJ 10, Subang Jaya

After a brief audit into the archives of the TOG, I realised there is a major non-representation for certain cuisines, and Thai in particular. All of that is going to change as there is a new spicy attraction in the Subang area in the form of Thai Moment.

A peek inside.

Barely a year old, and yet this establishment has been attracting alot of patrons. The  place has a modern and hip ambiance, with pictures of the former King on full display. It is simple yet, it does help you transport yourself to a slightly foreign land. Of course ambiance is not the defining factor, as the main reason why this place is usually packed is due to its high quality yet affordable lip smacking delights.

Trying out a new dramatic take in taking photos.

The method of ordering does differ if you are coming alone or in a group. If you are alone or with just another person, a la carte dishes are the best way to go. I personally recommend the pineapple fried rice. It was tangy, spicy and slightly sweet, all of the usual notes that Thai cuisine is famous for. And it comes in a pineapple bowl, to finish things off.

Double trouble.

You can also order a bowl of tom yam with a serving of rice if you would like a more complete meal. A bowl, whether it is the red or white type, will be filled with various vegetables and protein of your choice of either chicken or seafood. Either one you choose will be fragrant, spicy and down right amazing. The type of soup will be down to personal preference. The red is more savoury and spicy, whereas the white is less oily and has a huge acidic kick to it.

One half of what we had ordered.

The best way of course, is if you had an ensemble of buddies to join with you! On one of my various visits, I visited the establishment with my parents a few of their friends and ordered a variety of rice dishes. And for that visit, we went all out, getting ourselves fried aubergine (or brinjals for some of you), green chicken curry, spicy kangkong and a whole steamed fish. And to finish it all off, we had, you guessed it, some red tom yam.

So much ingredients.

The green curry is worth taking note of and a possible revisit the next time I come over. It was very earthy and creamy. The chicken was tender to the touch and the sauce was an aromatic slurry that clutches onto the rice really well. There were very strong flavours and yet it was well balanced. I am positive that the curry paste did not come from a plastic packet. And it stood at a modest RM14.90. A real treat.

Delicious!

As for the steamed fish, it was siakap in a lime, chilli and garlic sauce. The sauce acted like a soup of sorts, as it was crisp and clear. The fish was fresh and you can really taste the chillies and limes. Imagine a spicy lemonade, but in a good way. Well executed. And this monster entered with a hefty RM39.90 price tag.

Mad or genius? Still refreshing though.

Everything was delicious and well balanced. It was great to see that the dishes were spicy enough to give you a buzz but still mild enough not to cause you to sweat buckets. But do practice some caution if you are a real chilli novice. But if you are really a fan of tom yam, why not try the tom yam Coke?

A peek from another angle.

And as for the price, I would have to say that the menu is rather reasonable. Ala carte dishes range from RM10-14 and mains will start from RM 10 onwards. Chicken dishes usually hover around the RM12 mark and seafood, being generally more expensive, is about RM20-ish. And in case you are wondering, the tom yam Coke stood at RM4.90.

Front of the house.

Long story short, if you like spicy and tangy food, then Thai Moment is a no brainer. Do note that they have another branch in Setapak. But if you would like to visit the one I tried in Taipan, then the address is as follows:

15, Jalan USJ 10/1d, Taipan Business Centre, 47620 Subang Jaya, Selangor
