Chicken rice @ Lian Kee Chicken Rice, USJ 14, Subang Jaya

If you ask a Malaysian on what is their favourite comfort food, many come to mind. There is a huge percentage of us however, that would put chicken rice in their top 10 list. And I am one of them. We all have our favourite places and local checkpoints to get our fix on. One of those local check points for me is Lian Kee, located nearby my old high school.

There are alot of people, and this is a weekday night!

In the morning and mid afternoon, the premises known as Restoran Meisek, is sprawling with activity as it is a hawker food court in the day. But when the sun sets, only chicken rice reign supreme. Well, the place does not just sell chicken rice, as they have other items too like braised tofu and certain other meat dishes. Then again, you go to a place that is good for something, naturally you would have to order their specialties, no?

Easy to read menu.

As it was late at night and I needed more than just chicken and rice to fill me up, I also ordered a bowl of meatballs and soup to compliment my meal. Hey, a guy needs to eat, especially after a late night back from work.

Dinner is served.

I have been here several times before and it has always been good. Simple and comforting, you do not have to re-invent the wheel to have patrons coming back. If it ain't broke why fix it? The flavours are familiar and yet delicious.

Simple, but perfection all the same.

The chicken here has always been cooked perfectly. The meat is tender and firm, giving it a good bite. The meat is also slathered with a soy based sauce spiked with sesame oil, a staple in such places. Topped with coriander (cilantro to those American readers), and you get a perfect chicken dish. The rice was good too. Full bodied and scented with ginger, it was a great companion to the chicken.
A serving of chicken rice is RM6.20. Oh and the chilli sauce that comes with is a real show stopper.

Well, it was still a good bowl of soup.

The soup was just ok as the meatballs tasted more like they came from a packet. Do not get me wrong. It was full bodied and had a lot of flavour. It was just that it tasted awfully similar to the ones Mum would get from the market. And it probably might be so. The soup was a great condiment and second act though. The aroma from the Chinese white cabbage that was used to prepare this concoction was evident. There were hints of dried shrimp and daikon as well. You can get the soup on its own FOC. With 6 meatballs however, and it will cost you a not so hefty sum of RM6.50

Front of the house. Just take note of the smaller sign.

A great way to end a long working day, and they do open in weekends too. Just be careful if you come on a Saturday or Sunday as the waiting time may be long. That is the case even if you are taking out. One of my go to places, notched in my favourites list. Fancy in getting some fowl with grains? The address is as follows:
