Steak and Rice @ Kafue Kissaten, Heiwamachi, Nagasaki

Sometimes having something you do not know works or is something you least expect can turn out to become something amazing. Fruit with steak on rice? Sounds a bit bizarre but it works and it was really delicious.

Retro electricity

Kafue Kissaten (珈琲家 喫茶店), is a small but cozy cafe located in the area not too from the Peace Park. And it seems to be a hit with the locals. Seeing the great reviews that they had, I was very curious and would like to try it for myself. Once you step in, then you will probably know why. The establishment felt like a retro British cafe with CDs, cassettes and other music memorabilia from the days gone by, especially the Beatles. You really do feel like you got slingshot back to the 70s, which was pretty awesome.

So much colour!

The atmosphere was nice but how is the food? Well, being a kissaten, it serves Japanese style western food such as fried pasta and rice with certain sides. One of their main star makers is their steak and rice lunch place, affectionately called the Mo Plate. Standing at 1100 yen with a side of coffee, this seemed like a great bargain.

A spoonful of magic

A great bargain indeed it was. The plate was colourful and was loaded with various salad vegetables and satsumas. Citrus and beef was not a combo I anticipated but it worked very well. The sweetness and tartness help cut through the savoury elements of the meat, giving it a pleasant flavour and mouthfeel. The rice was also seasoned with some sort of soy sauce and butter infusion marinade. Soy sauce and butter is such an underappreciated combination that people should try, and it worked perfectly here.

What a beautiful cup.

The coffee was also very nice. I am not too sure what beans that they have used, since they do have their own blends. Still, it was earthy, deep, and has a light crispy mouthfeel. Crispy seems odd in terms of describing coffee. But once you have a sip of this, it is easy to know why. It came in a cute antique cup as well, which was a nice touch.

Front of the house.

It should be noted that the cafe is manned by an elderly couple, so they may be a bit slow in terms of serving you. However, this was totally fine as it gave me the chance to absorb the atmosphere and enjoy the music from a bygone era. So if you are someone who likes retro music, into British mod culture, or just somehow walking through this part of Nagasaki, this small shop is worth a visit. If you fancy a go, then the address is as follows:

 4-15 Heiwamachi, Nagasaki, 852-8116
