Chicken Wings @ Agemon no Sakaeya, Kasuya District, Fukuoka
This is probably the furthest route I have taken in a long while to get a box of wings! But it was really worth it and quite the journey.
Majestic |
Located near Kidonanzoin-Mae Station, this area is the drop off point for tourists and pilgrims before heading to the legendary Nanzoin temple, which is located in the outskirts of the prefecture. The temple is located by a hillside and surrounded by greenery. The whole temple compound is expansive and an initial visit will take at least an hour in terms of exploring. The main attraction is the giant bronze Buddha statue which is the temple's claim to fame.
A street stall indeed. |
After bringing a few friends around the temple, it was time for something to eat. Fortunately for us, there was a fried chicken wings stall just next to the station. I have always passed by this stall a few times whenever I visit this area. It is next to the station after all. The smell of fried treats has always enticed me but I never tried it. Well, until now.
Choices oh choices |
Seeing as a batch of freshly fried chicken wings was just forked out of the fryer, it was the obvious choice. The stall also has a few other treats like fried sweet potato and fish cake. But chicken wings were just too good to resist and I bought a box, or rather 2. One box was just 600 yen. Not too expensive.
The surface detail! |
As this was just a stall and not a restaurant or a shop, we ended up chowing down on our wings sitting by a bench in the station. Not the most refined way in terms of eating, but then when was chicken wings refined anyway? Despite the inconvenience, the wings were great and were one of the better fried chicken experiences I had in a long while.
This was indeed glorious |
The batter was ultra crunchy and the sound it makes was akin to chowing down on corn flakes. It was that crunchy. The seasoning in the batter was pretty good too. I am not too sure what was inside, but there were some traces of pepper. It might just be classic salt and pepper. Still, the batter was some killer and it was not too greasy. The chicken was fresh as well and was cooked to perfection. Every bit was juicy and tender. In any event, the wings were so good that having them as they were was good enough. Some people may want some ketchup with them, but trust me. They are already as good as they were. Why ruin something that is already perfect? Fortunately, getting rid of the bones was not too troublesome. I asked the store staff where is the closest dustbin and they gladly assisted in getting rid of my plastic bag loaded with bones.
The front of the station. |
This was street food at its finest, especially when you are literally facing a street. Although I strongly recommend the chicken wings, I do admit that getting here is a lot of trouble. So unless if you are coming here for the temple, you may find good fried chicken in Fukuoka city proper. Still, it will not be this awesome. Fancy a go? Then the address is as follows:
Sasaguri, Kasuya District, Fukuoka 811-2405
