Coffee @ Starbucks Reserve, Genting Highlands, Pahang

I don't usually post stuff about chains. But when I do, it is usually for something very special. Needing that caffeine punch, I thought of heading to the nearest cafe around. Little did I know I ended up in a Starbucks Reserve, or Starbucks R in short.

Variation to the usual sign

For the uninitiated, it is a new initiative by Starbucks where they are getting special coffee beans and blends through out the world, priding in making coffee planting sustainable. The preparation of such concoctions are also somewhat special as given to you are options in ways that are different from the usual espresso machine. In this outlet, you can choose the drip, the siphon, or the french press. It is also prepared in a separate counter, away from the usual place where they prepare their coffee.

Take your pick.

Being one of five Starbucks Reserve in the country, Genting's SkyAvenue hit the jackpot again in regard to novelty points. And yes, the pun was intended.

The caffeine source for the day

Coffee wise, I was recommended the Aged Sumatran. As the name suggests, it is sourced from Indonesia and the beans have been stored for at least 3 years before it arrives at the store for it to be consumed. Something akin to whiskey. Once a selection is made, the barista will measure the beans and grind them before putting it pass the drip. It is a tedious process, and it is something I do not think working people who are on a rush would appreciate. But hey, its a Saturday in a casino resort, so I had the ample time to spare.

Work in progress

So with all that out of the way. how was it? The coffee is deep and woody. It has a hickory smell to it, like smokey smell you get from a roast. There is some hints of fruitiness, which is fine. But I know it would not be for everyone as some people just do not like sour coffee. The coffee overall was great and is something that you need time to slowly savour and sip. Luckily I met a new friend by the brewing bar and took my time taking it down.

The end result, and it even comes with a different sleeve

It was a great cuppa joe. But then again when it is priced at RM21, I expect nothing less! I was told that the other outlets are cheaper than in Genting, which is no surprise. Its still an interesting experience to have, as it elevates the usual coffee experience to another level. However, if you would like to try the aged Sumatra though, chances are it might no longer be available now as the beans are constantly being changed and new types are introduced from time to time. Again, as my post on Motorino's, everyone knows where Genting is. yet, for completeness sake, here is the address to Starbucks R:

Lot T2B-31, Sky Avenue, Genting Highlands, 69000 Pahang

The sign outside. Not something you would normally see in the mall.
