Dango @ Charyou Wakana, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto

It has been a long time since I have been to Kyoto. Famed for its historical significance and architectural beauty, this ancient city is a must-visit for all tourists coming to Japan. And speaking of tourists, more and more are coming in now due to the relaxation of the borders that occurred not too long ago. While there may be packed streets, there are still a few quaint and quiet spots worth a visit. One such place is a little cafe called Charyou Wakana (茶寮和香菜), translated as "Incensed Teahouse".

Grill ready

Having not had breakfast that day, I was really keen on getting anything down the gullet. And luckily Wakana was just by the yonder by the street I was walking on. Although they do have main meals, I decided to stave away until lunchtime proper. But what they are famous for is their dango, or rather mochi dumplings on a stick.

A modest menu

The front of the shop has a counter where you can order a sweet soy-flavoured version, the mugwort version, or my personal kinako with kuromitsu, which translates as roasted soy powder with black sugar syrup. Being just 250 yen each, it was a very small commitment. And after sitting for a moment on the grill, my wonderful candy-like morsel was ready. Yeap, they cook it as per-order, which is a good plus point.

Fresh off the grill

Being still warm to the touch, it was totally delectable. The outer parts were nicely charred with a slightly crispy exterior. The inside was soft, chewy, and very tender. Great contrast of texture. The kinako powder provided some depth, while the sugar syrup added moisture and of course some sweetness. However, it is not some simple sugar syrup, as being black sugar, it has a caramel-like edge to it, giving it more personality than just your table sugar. This was just awesome to have.

What a close up!

And not too long, the sweet treat just went down just like that. It was pretty satisfying. So if you are somehow wandering around the area close to Yasaka Shrine, why not drop by for something sweet and nice? The address of Wakana is as follows:

476-2 Shimokawaracho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0825
