Yuba croquette @ Kirakuan , Sannenzaka, Kyoto

Ok now, for you vegetarians readers, this one is for you! And once again, finding good food can surprisingly come from places you do not expect. This time, it was from a stand outside a kimono shop.

Before the crowd arrives.

The twin streets of Ninnenzaka and Sannenzaka are some of the main must visits streets in the whole of Kyoto. Beautiful wooden huts by each corner, it feels like you were suddenly warped into a samurai movie set when you step into the historic alleyways here. And being a touristy spot, shops are of course a plenty. But since I am here, why not give some local delicacies a go? Rather be an explorer than live as a skeptic right?

A food stand outside a clothes shop? Why not?

Outside Kirakuan (喜楽庵・岡本 三年坂店), lies a small stand that sells some street snacks and drinks. And who will say no to some street snacks like  croquettes and ice cream. And being Kyoto, it is always a good idea to have some soy products as the region is known to have one of the country's best. So it was a no brainer that I quickly ordered a yuba cream croquette. That golden delight stood for ¥250.

Look at that golden exterior.

The outer shell was golden and has a reverberating crunch. And the filling was rather divine. The cream inside felt very similar to a corn chowder, and the inner core was where the yuba was hiding. The soy bean skin was smooth and slightly rubbery, in a good way.

The yuba in the center.

The soy milk skin was firm yet breaks apart when you bite it through. And not to mention, that woody and slightly floral taste you get from having fresh soy milk. I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome here and it kept me going a little longer during my trek around the Kiyomizu area. This is the first time I had something this interesting and unique. And I hope it would not be the last. So if you are keen in trying this unique treat out, the address is as follows:

340-3 Kiyomizu, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0862, Japan
