Bak Kut Teh @ Chao Zhou Bak Kut Teh, SS18, Subang Jaya

Its always great to find BKT haunts out of the usual Klang spots. And here is one establishment that I visit often, which is nearby where I live. Yea I know. Convenience is a factor, but that does not mean this place provides lousy food. In fact, it was the total opposite.

On a crowded weekend

Chao Zhou has been a go to for me for many years since I lived in Subang. Great and honest pork soup, this is one of the few places I introduce to foreign friends who live in Malaysia. And being a BKT establishment, the porky soup is the main thing that you should try. Like most places, you can get the classic soupy version or the dry one.

The gruesome twosome

Both versions comes in a claypot that was blasted with fire before serving. A classic way of preparing the dish. And the flavours are the usual suspects when it comes to it all. Do note that the claypots come to you straight from the stove. So touch them with caution.

The classic

The soup from the "wet" version was aromatic and sweet. It was surprisingly crisp and not too heavy on the palate. The aroma of licourice and garlic was very evident and there was a smoky backdrop when it comes to the overall flavour. And if you like innards, you would love this as it was loaded with tripe and intestines. I generally do so I did not mind one bit. The meat was quite fresh too.

It was so hot that it was still boiling!

The dry version has a stronger and saltier profile. It had a lot of aggressive personality and the sauce was stick and sinful. I personally felt like it was more like a braised pork dish instead. Still, it was an amazing porky delight and it went down very fast. Both variations were perfect with rice.  If you live for the savoury, I strongly suggest that you take some crullers, or yutiao, and smother it with the sauce from the dry version. It absorbed the sauce well and I could actually eat it on its own.

Table for two

This place is another gem that is out of the usual streets of Klang. And it was a budget gourmand's dream as well, our dinner for 2 was for RM44, which included a serving of vegetables, rice, crullers and a serving of tea each. Keen on trying this place out? The address is as follows:

11G, Jalan SS 18/1b,  47500 Subang Jaya
