Dinner @ Convo Restaurant and Bar, SS 13, Subang Jaya

Never eaten in a factory warehouse before? Never keen in trying? Well hope this post will change your mind. It was by parents birthday some time ago (yea they were born 2 days apart) and they had a old school reunion there before and suggested the place. So why not? Always up in trying something new.

Deep inside an industrial park, the Subang Jaya Industrial Estate, it is a but unassuming at first. But when you see alot of people parking around a corner and lights start to emanate from there, you know there is more going on. The inside does feel much cozier than the outer part lets you to.

Being a warehouse, it has a vast space and is very brightly lit. The design is very simple but effective. Modern minimalism in display right here. There is a long bar at the corner and there is an upstairs area for big parties. Do note that this place is terribly popular, so if you are not coming in earlier than 7, be prepared to wait. Or at least, make a reservation.

How about the food? It is a mish mash of different cuisine styles. There are pizzas, fry ups, Turkish style stews and stir fry pastas. Well, basically a bit of everything. Lets just call it fusion for simplicity sake. As we decided the share, we had ordered a duck pizza, a mushroom pasta and a spring chicken set. And as for me, I had a bowl of soup for myself. And the soup of the day was the pumpkin soup.

The pumpkin soup was a little mild in terms to flavour. It was ok, but the fragrant and floral aroma is a little thin. It had great texture though. Being RM 15.90, it is a little pricey for the quality that I was given. Luckily, business picked up steam from here.

The duck pizza, called the Duckling was a spectacular dish. Topped with a great amount of smoked duck and charred peppers, it has the same amount of wok hei a fry up from a Chinese hawker stall. Splatters of pesto added some dimension and freshness to the pizza. And if you are a cheese fan, then this is for you as the pizza is not only coated with heaps of mozzerella, some have spilled over and created a crusty and crunchy skin. The outer parts of the pizza does taste like a parmesan chip. This was great and a flavour explosion. Standing at RM33.90, this was real value as the quality was outstanding.

The Milwaukee Spring Chicken came next and it was served on a chopping board. Like literally. And it was not just whole bird that was put before us, but a serving of fries and also a pail (?) of Caesar's salad. The salad was well seasoned, with specks of anchovies tainting the gravy-like dressing. And the chicken was also well seasoned and smoked perfectly. There was no spot too dry on the bird and you can see that the chicken was cooked evenly. Ketchup and chilli sauce is defnilitely not needed for this one. As for the fries, they are just about average. You cant always have it all right?

The mushroom pasta was alright. It had alot of fresh and dried mushrooms of various types in the sauce. It had a woody and savoury flavour, as it should, being mushroom based. Although this was slightly above average. It was decent, but the RM24.90 price tag made it a bit unjustified.

And as it was my folks' special day, a serving of dessert, which was churros was on the house, The churros were golden brown and had a distinctive crunch. The outside was a crunchy and the inside was soft to the touch. Complimenting it was a side of chocolate ice cream and vanilla Chantilly cream. A special mention needs to be made on the ice cream. It felt like I went and take a dive into a Cadbury factory vat. It was that chocolaty. And with specks of chocolate bits inside and also cookie crumbs at the bottom, it was surprisingly multi-dimensional.

There were a few meh moments, but there were alot of high notes which make this place a special spot worth recommending. The food, for the most part, is high quality and reasonably priced, but with a few exceptions of course. The vibe of the place is slick, cool and yet has a cozy charm to it all. Fancy taking a special someone over? or just wanna have a big dinner with family and friends? Here is the address:
