Steamed buns @ New Paradise, Restoran Wai Kwan, USJ 6

A great steamed bun never fails to satisfy. And a proper home made one is even better.

A view into the kopitiam

Steam bellowing from bamboo stacks filled with pillow like mounds stuffed with a variety of fillings, lines are a familiar sight at Restoran Wai Kwan, a kopitiam near the USJ 7 LRT station. And it is for good reason. New Paradise Restaurant has made its name in Ipoh selling steamed paos and now has stepped foot into Klang Valley, with a stall in Wai Kwan. Paos here are made fresh and steamed on the spot. So no short changing here as the buns are made on site at the back of the premises.

A line waiting to happen, and do check out the menu above.

There is a huge variety to choose from. The usual suspects such as char siew and red adzuki beans are present and are usual favourites. There is also some unique ones like “mui chai” salted vegetable and curry stuffed and “nam yee” bean buns.

Glorious!

We were able to get the “mui chai” but those other unique varients were already sold out. Although slightly more expensive that the usual kopitiam prices, the premium is worth it as you are guaranteed a fresh bun from the get go. I know many a kopitiam that sell buns but source them elsewhere, or from a frozen packet. The “mui chai” bun was great and is what I would expect from it. Slightly salty, and a bit deep, the bun cuts through the flavours like how rice would have been.

Salted veggies never tasted this good.

The char siew bun was also a treat to have. Well seasoned and well balanced, there is a combination of sweet and savoury. The adzuki bun was also good but then you cannot re-invent the wheel on such a staple. How about the bun casing itself? It was fluffy, slightly sweet and very fresh. There is indeed an art on making it, and the pleats made this slightly more refined that what such buns are, staple street food.

Simple yet delicious.

A quaint and simple place to be at for a filling Saturday breakfast and is relatively easy on the pocket. Want to add another breakfast spot for the weekend? Why not drop by Wai Kwan? Also there are other dishes in store like noodles and soup, which are common in establishments like this. The address is as follows:

17, Jalan USJ 6/1,  47610 Subang Jaya, Selangor

More buns in the works.
