Breakfast @ Coffee House Katsura, Ueno, Tokyo
Many people, myself included find it vital to have breakfast to start the day. Whether it's just oats and eggs, something more lavish like Japanese style salmon and rice, or bread with bacon (oh boy!), some sustenance is needed kick start the system. And since I am once again back in Ueno, options are aplenty when it comes to kissaten.
Cozy |
It is not hard to spot one. They look like classic retro eateries with a tinge of nostalgia and classic Western-inspired Japanese dishes. When it comes to breakfast, the classic toast will take centerstage. As Katsura is literally the same block as my hotel I am staying, it just makes sense. I got myself their Set B, which consists of a block of toast, a boiled egg, salad and a cup of coffee. Everything stood at 650 yen, which is somewhat reasonable.
Yes! |
Although I did mention a block of toast, I was not joking. That slice of bread was almost the size of a brick! Slathered with butter and you get a simple but very pleasing sight for the eyes. Lucky for me it has been sliced into 3 separate pieces which makes for an easy eating experience. If you asking me to say something out of this world, well this is not one of those days. This breakfast is pretty standard. However, it was very satisfying and fills me up just nicely.
A noteworthy zoom in |
Nothing fancy, nothing special, simple and straightforward. Despite that, I had a good time chomping things down. The toast was buttery and crunchy on the outside, but fully inside. The egg was cooked to perfection. And the salad gave some freshness to round off the meal. In the end, it was still very enjoyable and keeps you energised.
Caffeinated reprieve |
I liked the coffee as well. I has a tinge of fruitiness. I am not a particular person when it comes to coffee, except that I do not like sour notes. Having said that, this was particularly pleasant. And they provided me with a small pot of cream to use. I did tip in a few drops of it at the latter end, providing me some variety to everything.
Front of the house |
After clearing out my breakfast, I decided to sit a bit longer to read the news as the ambience of this place is actually their main star. It is a time capsule to days gone by, with some retro coziness completing the feel. It is sitting in such a place that you can really feel that you are in Tokyo. Granted, you do not have to come to Katsura, as Ueno is loaded with many establishments such as this. But if you choose to come here, you will not regret it. Fancy a go? The address is as follows:
7 Chome-12-8 Ueno, Taito City, Tokyo 110-0005, Japan
