Fusion Brunch @ Breakfast Thieves, APW, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur
I recently had the opportunity to try out Breakfast Thieves with a few friends some time back. Known for its colourful food displays and long lines, I decided to give it a go as I have yet to visit the place.
Many writers have sampled the place before and I heard mixed comments about it, so I thought maybe I should give it a try as well. Being a Sunday, there is a line to battle through. And when I say battle, what I meant was an hour wait. Of course it is a given that being a Sunday, but if you want something quick and you are on the edge of hunger, your best bet would probably be elsewhere. But you know, like the old saying goes, good things come to those who wait. Well was it worth the wait?
The decor is simple but impressive. Giant panes of glass windows allow sunlight to come in easily, making the place very bright. Alot of wood is used and thus giving it a very natural look, while providing a minimalist vibe to the place as well. The food? Well, we will soon find out.
To start any good brunch, coffee is in order and the long black was the first in line. Called the americano to others, the coffee is alright. It is not super stunning and there are better ones out there but gets the job done. It was RM9 for a small cup.
One of my friends decided to give the Tinker Bell a try. A combination of avocado and coconut, it was more to a milkshake or a smoothie. Inside it contains a slather of chocolate and some salted caramel is sprinkled on top. The coconut taste was a very pronounced aftertaste. Although I do like it somewhat, I can understand of some people may not be a fan of it. That concoction was RM 16 a pop.
Something you do not usually see everyday, coconut with avocado. |

It cannot be denied that the establishment has presentation on point and make for many an Instagrammer post. But do not judge a book by its cover, and do not judge a dish based on the angle the garlic bread is laid out on the tray. I ordered The Legend. And with such a name, I had high hopes for it not to be a let down. Lo and behold, what was called legendary was actually skillet Mexican eggs, which in all fairness can be very delicious if done right and has many options in customizing. The sauce was a bit too acidic for my taste and was very fiery. Some flavour imbalance seems to be afoot here. The chorizo beef balls were well seasoned but the quantity of the beef was not enough to save this dish, although the eggs were alright. It worked well when eaten with the garlic bread that came with it. An alright affair, but far from legendary. That skillet was RM25.
One of my friends had the Leprechaun. Thinking that something Irish might come, she was served with a plate of corn fritters, poached eggs and avocado. Again, presentation was spot on and the plate was gorgeous. The dish however, was left much to be desired. The eggs look like dumplings and the fritters were fried to perfection. But then those golden morsels are still corn fritters, and nothing else. The menu did mention of zucchini (or courgettes to some). But they are not enough to stand out. That plate stood at RM 25, which is quite steep for fried veggies.
My other friend had scrambled eggs on toast, which stood at RM14. The eggs were alright but the toast was a little too hard. I was not too sure it was because it was sourdough, but she unfortunately did not finish the toast.
Will I come over again? Well it depends. There are much better and cheaper places out there. The packaging of the place is nice and pleasing to the eyes. But when one goes deep into the core, there is nothing much to shout about. However, as always, if you would like to visit this place, the location of the establishment is as follows:
Lot M, 29-5 Jalan Riong, Bangsar
59100 Kuala Lumpur
