Stained Glass Pudding @ Minami Yamate Pudding, Nagasaki

If you are a fan of all things sweet, you are going to love this place. And if you are into aesthetics, all the better as this will tick all the boxes.

Minami Yamate Pudding, is a local speciality pudding store from Nagasaki located not too far away from Oura Cathedral and the Dejima Wharf area. Located in a very picturesque part of the prefecture, it is only fitting that its most famous dish that they have is something that is equally beautiful, if not better. Although it looks like a tourist trap on the outside, I have my friend who is a local that recommended it. Locals have also provided positive comment about the place So it has to be good right?  And indeed it was.

What a display

The establishment has various types of puddings in store ranging from different fillings and price tags. But their main hot seller is their stained glass pudding which is aesthetically pleasing at it sounds. Standing at 450 yen a pop, it stood at this middle ground being not too expensive but not too cheap. Having said that, it tasted incredible.

Beauty in a bottle

The stained glass layer of the dessert was made with a combination of various fruit juices and jellies. There were hints of citrus, berries, and other delicious aromas. But the bottom has a creamy and eggy texture which has a strong punch of vanilla. With them combined, it has lead to an indulgent mouthful.

Velvety smooth

However, it was not too sweet and was so easy to take down. The contrast of the two layers somehow complimented each other and I found it to be refreshing and rich at the same time. The floral afternotes of the creamy vanilla layer would have been a great standalone dessert and you get get it on its own as well for 420 yen. Still, the fruity components of this made everything taste so much better with various elements just combining into one cohesive and velvety experience.

Front of the house. You cannot miss it.

So if you are somehow in this part of Nagasaki and you like sweet treats, you would do yourself a favour in dropping by. Even if you do not have a sweet tooth, this establishment is worth a visit. Do note that they do have other unique flavours like coffee, salted caramel, and sweet potato. So if something fruity isn't your jam, there are other options that may be suitable to your taste.
